So you may have noticed that the Twitter login of https://movetodon.org/ is not working at the moment.
According to twitter, the app “has violated Twitter Rules and policies”. I can’t tell much more at the moment since the email they mention never arrived in my inbox.
I try to get more information from Twitter, but they already mentioned that it may take a few days to get back to me.
@Tibor thanks for helping so many people migrate! You did a good thing.
@Tibor The app was great, I suppose they just wanted to put one final nail in the coffin of apps before lowering it down.
@Tibor Just horrendous, Tibor. I’m so sorry.
@Tibor you built something wonderful, and we'll be grateful for it no matter what BS reason Twitter eventually uses to kill it off. It helped us find each other here and connect quickly, when there wasn't a large window of time to do so.
@Tibor Thank you for this very helpful tool! Understandable if it won't work any more due to the Chief Twit.
@Tibor It's worth a shot anyway but this exact thing is what happened to Twitter clients. Quietly suspended, no promised email, no reply. Watch out for a vague tweet from @TwitterDev in a few days' time about how you violated "long-standing rules" that don't exist I guess
Thank you anyway for running this, I convinced a bunch of friends to come over and try Mastodon because of it.
@Tibor “..the game is mine and I won't let you take my chips...”
@Tibor: Thank you for creating this. It helped me find most of my peeps who were still there. But at this point, they won't be finding me as I have finally closed my Twitter account. Fortunately, it is easy to find most others using the search bar in most clients. And I've met a lot of new people as well. It's not worth fretting over when Elon is having a hissy fit and punishing everyone for breathing.
@Tibor coming up with an explanation after the fact takes some time!
@Tibor strange, as debirdify still seems to be working OK
@Tibor "Please give us the time to specially handcraft a fictitious policy you have violated before it existed"
@Tibor hey, big thanks for keeping it up as long as you did!
@Tibor It has been three weeks since I submitted that form for our suspension. Don’t expect a response or any other information from Twitter.
@Tibor
Bear with them, they need time to write the rules that it broke.
@Tibor Takes about a week most of the time
@Tibor following the third party client timeline the dev account will issue a nonsense statement sometime next week and suddenly a long-standing rule will appear in dev terms and conditions
@Tibor besides this: Sorry to see your great tool being pulled. It helped me for a good start here
@Tibor Why not create another API key with another account?
We can have thousands of accounts with thousands of API keys, and let's see if Elon has enough time to ban all of them.
@Tibor I would suggest you talk to a lawyer - perhaps a group like Electronic Frontier Foundation, or a group focused on fighting abusive monopolies, might be interested in representing you in an anti-trust lawsuit.
@Tibor I guess you’re still waiting to hear back more than half a year later?
@Tibor can I get the code somewhere? If everyone host it, twitter wouldn't be able to ban it.
@Tibor wow, you're kidding..
@stux I wish
@Tibor could this be made to leverage the data export that Twitter users an individually request to download?
Exactly what I was thinking. It would work faster too. There is a `following.js` json file with the Twitter ID # of everyone one is following.
@instanceofme @Tibor Well, it will work until the Twitter's export feature either breaks or is removed.
@mr_rcollins @Tibor unfortunately one still needs to then query the Twitter API to retrieve the handle from the account ID, but at least this info can be cached/shared across users
@instanceofme @Tibor You're only worried about the IDs of people that have already used Movetodon, correct? Couldn't the user enter their Twitter ID number and then use the tool?
The user's account id is in the exported data in `account.js`. So a user of movetodon 2.0 could upload account.js and following.js and match up?
There's probably more going on behind the scenes though...
@Tibor I assume you broke the rules because you offered a ladder out of the prison of twitter
@Tibor@mastodon.social Welp just wrote in my newsletter that I couldnt confirm yet if it was a twitter issue of just a service overload, lemme rewrite that quickly.
this seriously changes things though, damn
@Tibor damn, it was good while it lasted. thanks for making it, it was incredibly useful
@Tibor thanks for the good work you’ve done up to this point. A lot of us have used your tool to make our place here over the past couple of months.
@Tibor I got the Debirdify app to work for me: https://debirdify.pruvisto.org/ seems like a good alternative
@Tibor oooh and now I know who you are and I’m all embarrassed for that last toot. I’ll crawl back under my rock now.
@Tibor @fediversereport unsurprising behaviour from them! I noticed this yesterday when I was trying to switch. I ended up successfully using https://fedifinder.glitch.me/ instead.
@fediversereport I didn’t even know about the others! It’s good that there’s a few but yes I agree lol, I sadly doubt it will last.
@Tibor It looks like Mr. Musk is afraid of competition.
@Tibor isn't it related to the recent announcements regarding the changes in the API pricing?
@Tibor still waiting for our email.
There are alternatives to this, such as https://fedifinder.glitch.me/
@Tibor glad I did this yesterday!
@Tibor thanks for movetodon.org. Used it last night just in the knick of time! Buh bye Twitter..
@Tibor Thanks for the hard work!
@Tibor Another long standing API rule I guess.
@Tibor Not a surprising move by Twitter. Thanks for making the tool!
@Tibor They're locking everyone in. The gates are closing. There's nothing we can do to help them any more.
The poor people. Trapped in a single app, under the control of a single corporate maniac. :(
People: "We are moving away from Twitter"
Twitter: "Hey, that's illegal or something! You can't do that"
