The 'check engine' light on my car came on last night and the diagnostic is going to be $150, not to mention any repairs that need to be done.
I'm a freelance writer/blogger on a fixed income. No one seems to want to pay writers much (if at all) these days, and I could really use your help.
If you can, please help. If you can't, please boost/re-toot/reblog this.

Thanks!
@TransEthics I'm pretty sure pep boys will read the check engine code for you for free
@TransEthics yo, take that vehicle to any auto parts store, most will read the check engine code for you, for free! Very possible it's an o2 sensor or something, doesn't need to be fixed.
.@YOLO_STALIN She's been acting a little strange tho, so I'm pretty sure I'll need repairs. I'll search other shops, but not many in my area state that they service my make/model.
@YOLO_STALIN @TransEthics Not to turn this into a mechanics discussion, but not 100% true. In a lot of cases the front O2 sensor is used to determine if the engine is getting the right amount to fuel. If it's broken, you lose power and economy. The car won't run as well as it could and it costs you more in fuel. The O2 sensor after the cat is there to see if the cat is working or not for emissions. And isn't essential except to pass any inspection requirements.
@TransEthics Is there an Advance Auto Parts or Autozone nearby? They'll read the trouble code(s) for free.
@TransEthics ...in case that $150 is just for the dealer to do the same thing.
.@jquinby They do apply that $150 towards the repairs. She's been acting a bit odd of late, so I'm pretty sure repairs will be required. :slight_frown:
@TransEthics $150 for a code read?! That's highway robbery! You can buy a scanner for $30 or less and look the codes up yourself online. You may even be able to go to your local auto parts store and get the codes read for free.
@TransEthics <3 Wish I had money to donate right now.
If you stop by an AutoZone, they can read the diagnostic code at least, for free or nominal charge. Might be a start.
@TransEthics Also, ten clean starts in a row will clear some flags that are happenstance.
@TransEthics Anyone billing more than $50 to plug in an OBD-II reader to your car to figure out what's up is scamming you—you can buy your own reader for not much cheaper than that.
@AerdanX Been having problems finding a shop that services my car in this area… seems I have unintentionally expensive tastes. :/
@TransEthics Note you can do the diagnostics yourself with a $20 bluetooth adaptor off amazon and a smartphone. I understand this isn't anyone's cup of tea, but it can potentially save you a lot of money, especially if the issue is non-serious.
.@nergdron I'm considering that option in the long term. However my car is about 800 miles from 40k, so I need to take her in for service anyway...
@TransEthics fair. also, if your car is so low mileage, shouldn't this be covered by warranty?
@nergdron Warranty ended at 36,000 :disappointed:
@TransEthics awww booo that blows. I'm sorry. :worried:
@nergdron Yeah… unfun.
@TransEthics You need to write a tldr no one gonna read
