All the talk about bans, censorship made me think we are getting the worst of both worlds online.
One one hand, sharing information privately is much harder online than offline.
On the other hand some people seem to think that abuse, slurs and insults are OK in a public digital space, whereas they would not be tolerated (in principle) on a civilized street.
I would much rather have the same private and public norms online and offline.
@Tryphon this is what the neighbourhood cops in both UK and NL (perhaps other countries too) are now trying to teach to teenagers in high school (who will all have grown up with the Internet), i.e what you do online is the same as in real life.
People who fight in the street, vandalise stuff, steal things etc tend to be observed on CCTV or reported by other citizens who do not tolerate that, and eventually end up being arrested and made to account for their behaviour!
