Who out there in the mastoverse has any interest in hydroponic gardening, and/or would be intrigued by a 'tower garden' hydroponic unit that you can assemble really quickly and that can produce two crops a month? (I'm involved in a local thing with some friends who've prototyped a unit and I'll be helping with their crowdfund and stuff).
@ratbaby Cool! They wanted to make something easier to assemble and cheaper than other stuff on the market, and their unit will be half the price (under $200 *including* worldwide postage) of the most popular US unit. I've seen the prototype and it takes up about a foot of floor space, and you can place it anywhere that gets sunlight :o
I'm sorry I sound like a salesperson, haha. I'm just kinda excited about it XD
@WelshPixie no it sounds really cool! It could really benefit lower income people who wouldn't have the space for something big
More info, and sorry for sounding like a sales rep as I talk about this XD It takes up about a foot of floor space, the basic unit has I think 8 slots and is ~4 feet tall. You can place it anywhere that gets sunlight. No dirt, it uses water and nutrients that you add to the water once a week, and stuff grows CRAZY FAST in it.
They've worked out they can sell at under $200 which includes worldwide postage, which is half the price of the popular US equivalent.
So it'll be really cool for small apartments that have balconies, or offices, schools, soup kitchens, little cafes and restaurants.
I'm mostly excited by how much food waste it could save - instead of buying a whole lettuce at the supermarket you just pick off as many leaves as you need, then the lettuce KEEPS GROWING. :O :O
@WelshPixie YES! But also no money ATM....
But we have a few windows we've considered putting hydroponics in for the dorm...
@maloki Cool! I guess depending on the situation where it's placed it could also be used to generate a tiny income, if you can sell the stuff you don't use. Also you'll be able to put expansion tubes on there for more planting slots (it'll come with two tubes with four slots each, but option to buy one or two extra tubes). Or if it's communal, everyone can chip in towards the cost.
@WelshPixie I'd be interested in hearing about the availability of the kit - I don't have a lot of indoor sun but would happily have a hydroponic tower on our back deck
@djsundog That would be perfect for it! They also work under those sun-lamp things.
@WelshPixie hydroponic gardens are really cool and I wish your friends and you much luck making it more accessible!
@dotUser Thankee :D :D
@WelshPixie I'm very interested, but mostly because I want to build them myself down the line, and open source the heck out of it.
@zatnosk That's cool!! That's a very awesome thing to open source ^.^
Tired: seize the means of production
Wired: seize the methods of producing the means of production
@WelshPixie
Sounds interesting. Is there a webpage?
@d6e not quite yet, still in the process of setting everything up. :)
@WelshPixie
Sounds very cool. Would be interested.
@WelshPixie
I'm definitely curious.
@WelshPixie this sounds v cool! We dont get any sun unfortunately (thanks to an absolutely gorgeous hundred year old sycamore, so i cant complain that much) so it probably wouldn’t work for us but I’d be happy to signal boost a crowdfunding post here or on tumblr
@Satsuma cool, thank you!
@WelshPixie people at sunbeam.city might be interested!
@WelshPixie I don't have the time to invest into gardening, even this hydroponics system. I'm more into electronics, and I don't even have time for that.
I should probably reduce my social media time even more, which is already very reduced from a few years ago.
@WelshPixie I won't have any space for something like that for a long time but I'd definitely be interested in keeping an eye on it/spreading it around
