computers
one of the things that is kind of depressing to me about the future of computers is how either you were
- born before computers were common, and you don't know what a file is or what to do with it
- born somewhere between the 90s and early 00s and you know what a file is
- born in the last decade and due to apple's and google's efforts are likely to not know what a file is
it seems like such a small and basic thing but its actually scary how the concept of Files is often hidden now
While Microsoft claims that the stuff coming out of Copilot is fair use but I see that, in the Copilot terms of service, they put the responsibility on you. Just in case.
"The code, functions, and other output returned to you by GitHub Copilot are called "Suggestions" ... you retain ... responsibility for ... Suggestions you include in Your Code."
Study of 129K researchers working on grants finds women 13% less likely than men to be named as authors on subsequent articles; 58% less likely to be named on patents. When women were included as authors, they reported more work than men.

Open Access history, 1987: Stevan Harnad, credited with coining "Gold/Green" OA, is bullied online by someone arguing for they/them pronouns. Their poo-poo words directly contributed to his belief that free internet publishing couldn't replace journals https://www.southampton.ac.uk/~harnad/skywriting.html
10 years ago Tor Books dropped DRM on all their ebooks.
Tor's still publishing books without DRM and doing just fine.
Every year in June I reread the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionary (STAR) manifesto that Marsha P Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, and others, authored. It's a reminder of what we are fighting for. It's less than a minute read.

@swaggboi I really want a "dumb" appliance store. My fridge should keep things cold, my toaster warm things up, my printer put ink on thin slices of dead tree, and my TV show whatever video stream I send it. None of these need to reach out over the network. Please sell me well made, well functioning, single use devices, that serve their purpose well.
Curiosity poll regarding social media approach.
Please boost because we're really curious about the experience-approach for as many users as possible.
We have excluded two options here and will explain why:
Twitter exclusively: probably not gonna see this poll if you don't use Fediverse at all
Spiderman: We assume everyone would add Spiderman to their options because of how polls work.
Dear #Fediverse
We need #Volunteers to organize an #Event and #Training for #EU representatives operating the official @EU_Commission accounts.
A month ago the @EDPS started a pilot for #EUVoice and #EUVideo and launched #Mastodon and #Peertube servers.
Many of you interacted, but also observed that communication can be improved. Less birdsite crossposting, more #accessibilty + image #captions. Knowing the culture, #fediquette and learn to love 💖 our fedi.
Love each other.
