@joshuatj OMG it's your ponytail!!!! I seriously thought your userpic was a picture of a lemur. 😂

@ablwr HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH now that you mention...

@ablwr #definitelycompression let's hope digipres.club won't need to compress the profile pic too much

@ablwr just hit a roadblock at starting a new instance of Mastodon. Trying another approach now.

@joshuatj good luck! I would like to help if I could! I want to be cooooooool

@ablwr I would definitely need help. Now I need to get it up and running first.

@joshuatj Well, let me know what I can do at a distance. Setting up servers is such a "lone person climbing the mountain" kind of task.

@ablwr IKR?! I could use some help to define what digipres.club instance is all about.

@joshuatj @ablwr ooo yes - I mean it's pretty blatantly inspired by Twitter's terrible ethics, so I think there's something to be said about taking the productive conversations held there and putting it on a platform made by our community, for our community. But who exactly that community is could use some more definition. I forget what I originally wrote for an instance description, but I can take another shot at some language And send it your way!

@The_BFOOL @joshuatj @ablwr maybe throw it in a google doc? I would like to jump ship from mastodon.social for an instance focused on memory work writ large — not just digital and not just preservation.

@ablwr @joshuatj @The_BFOOL @inkdroid ok. Google Doc at bit.ly/digipresdraft

Anyone with link can edit.

@joshuatj @ablwr @joshuatj @The_BFOOL @inkdroid y'all I'm still confused if I would need to make a second account in digipres.club to really "participate" within that one? (still confused by mastodon)

@archivist @joshuatj @ablwr @joshuatj @The_BFOOL it is confusing at first, but I think the email analogy works pretty well? It also kind of depends on what “really participate” means to you.

@The_BFOOL @joshuatj @ablwr @joshuatj @archivist for example, you can follow and direct posts to people on digipres.club without being on there yourself. You just don’t get to see the local timeline of messages from everyone on there. And you don’t get the benefits (stability, shared ethics, etc) of belonging to an instance that is managed by that community.

@inkdroid @The_BFOOL @joshuatj @ablwr @joshuatj OK, getting to see all the local timeline messages was what i wanted. if i didn't join, I could only see the messages of people I follow on there...right?

@archivist @inkdroid @joshuatj Also trying to get used to this. You could sign up and see the local timeline but set your account to "moved" to this one you are currently on (which is what I did with @ablwr, I "moved" to cybre.space and I might even "move" it again). I'm sure people are tired of me following them 10x while I try to sort this out.

@ashley @archivist @joshuatj @ablwr no, i think it's actually good practice/expeience to move around -- it's kind of the point right?

@ablwr @joshuatj @archivist @ashley still I would like to find an intentional community of folks to join, and share the cost of the infrastructure with.

@archivist @joshuatj @ablwr @inkdroid *extremely long awkward pause followed by awkward smile face stare*

@archivist @joshuatj @ablwr @joshuatj @The_BFOOL @inkdroid Yeah, so the reasons behind joining an instance like that or coalescing people into one is that you could then follow folks from anywhere and you could choose not to follow some LAM folks but still see their Public (and only Public) posts on the timeline. Great for keeping light tabs on "the discourse" + folks' lives without following everyone. OTOH it's not necessary & it's tricky to build momentum.

@archivist @inkdroid been trying to figure that out myself, since i joined a random french instance last year (which i actually kind of like)
