We just have dropped the 5 schematics (blueprints revealing how all the phone parts connect and function, which is useful for repairs 🪛) 💥
The sad reality is, not many companies would release their schematics. Official reasons cited usually include things like intellectual property protection and enhanced security. Unofficially, though, the most obvious reason we can make out seems to be the manufacturers’ insistence on gatekeeping repairs :blobnom: fairphone.com/en/2024/01/24/ha

@agnes007 Great job for #Fairphone to release the schematics! The only other electronic devices I own, that came with the schematics as part of the documentation, are vintage Soviet-made calculators.

@x0r @agnes007 Elektronika, was that the same soviet factory that built synthesizers like the EM-04 ?

@netimil @agnes007 From what I understand, they built all sorts of electronics. Clocks, for example, like the Elektronika 7. Or radios.

@x0r So it's certainty the same factory. The history of soviet industry is very interesting. I have a small collection of russian (KMZ) film cameras and I start to dig into electronics.

@netimil I’m not sure about that: the USSR was a gigantic country and I wouldn’t be surprised if there were different factories specialized in different kinds of things spread all over the Soviet Union.

@netimil Speaking about synthesizers, I found a video about the “Pif” synthesizer which came, in fact, from a factory in Ukraine. It doesn’t seem to have the Elektronika “brand” on it. (I put quotes between “brand” because I’m afraid I’m projecting my capitalist cultural bias when using that word.)

@netimil Yup, I’ve had a listen of some of the capabilities of the Elektronika EM-04. It sounds nice.

On calculators, I found this website, which apparently is a proper Soviet calculator museum now (and something I’d definitely give a visit if I ever get the chance to visit Moscow): elektronika.su/en/calculators/

@agnes007 I bought my current phone between the release of the Fairphone 4 and the Fairphone 5, and unfortunately the 4 had a few things that didn't fit my needs, but I'll definitely look into the Fairphone 7 when the time comes to change (assuming the release schedule and my average time between phones stay consistent)

Not so long ago (20/30 years) each electrical device was sold *with* their schematics.

I still have the one of my previous flat TV (bought around 2020).

I do not get why it stopped eventually.

That behaviour should be enforce by laws.

@agnes007 There are no valid reasons for withholding documents that ought to be public in the first place, as has been the norm for a hundred years.

That people forgot this the past 30 years is not an excuse.

We shouldn't have to commend you for doing what everyone else ought to and fails at. But thanks anyway for showing the way.

The service manual for the TRS-80 Model 100 has full schematics, block diagrams, the theory of operations, exact part numbers and specs for every component. You could take that manual and build one(ROM could be an issue, but at least you know what chip to get to put a ROM on). Unavailable parts? You know the original specs and what it did in the circuit so engineering a replacement is possilbe.
