Piece of advice from someone experienced with federated social networks:
*Every instance will have it's own rules and communities. Check that first to see if it's for you and respect those rules.
*Not every instance connects with all of them. Check that too.
*Some instances will have technical limits, mostly because they're run voluntarily or made for small groups. If you can, support the admins.
*You can find information about the above on home/sign up/faq pages. Read first.
*Be kind and enjoy!
@ahmetasabanci are there other federated social networks?
@Kaitlin yes, one of the big ones back then was Diaspora (more Facebook like) and StatusNet (Twitter like). StatusNet became GNU Social and Mastodon is created based on that. Also one of the creators and admin of most famous StatusNet site idetin.ca then created something called pump.io.
There's quite a messy history out there :)
@ahmetasabanci this might be a dumb question but, where do i find the instance's rules? besides in the /terms page.
@y It's not at all :) In most cases, you can find the rules or link for the rules at sign up pages or home pages you see when you're not logged in. Otherwise, it'll be either at FAQ or Extended Information page (like this one: https://mastodon.social/about/more).
@ahmetasabanci well i found it several hours ago, but thank you for explaining. it's not located anywhere on the homepage so i just tried stuffs. glad that it worked lol. thank you, once again!
@ahmetasabanci i picked my instance because it has a cool url.
@quinn This might be the first time I regret being an early adopter. So jealous of your url :D
@ahmetasabanci Great first toot! Welcome to moisty pastures! o/ #Awoo
