It's a flipping spit in the face every time i retoot someone and it says 'boosted'. All I want to do is add boost to my new (to me) car WHICH HASN'T BEEN DELIVERED YET!
Are there any good communities for digital nomads/remote tech workers?
As the prophet said, "past performance is no guarantee of future returns".
Going back to the BBS thing, in days long past I taught myself how to use WWIV, a popular BBS platform. Nowadays, I make web apps for a living. But I took a long time to learn that skill and in the years between I rarely thought about BBSes.
I didn't see the relationship for a long time. It just seemed like "the web" became some sprawling corporatized nightmare, all sales pitches and glossy design.
Or maybe the Yellow Pages only became worth a fortune when it was combined with the encyclopedia.
Similarly there's a genealogical link between Google and the phone book. Turned out the Yellow Pages was really worth a fortune.
There's a genealogical link between "Mark Zuckerberg's BBS" and the dumb BBS I used to chat about video games and play Legend of the Red Dragon on after school.
(BBSes were systems in the 80s that you called with your computer using a phone line. They were typically run by individuals and were just whatever weird-ass system they wanted to expose to the world.)
It's really weird to think of websites as people's BBSes.
It struck me that Mastodon might be some (many?) people's first experiences with a communication tool not run by a corporation.
The Internet is a monument to how hard it is to make anything of quality.
Quest rogue is hilarious.
I think so many in the tech press have become jaded from a ecade of over-funded and under-planned VC-fueled startups that they just write these rote "will it die," "will it kill [big thing]" pieces and forgot what got them interested in tech in the first place.
It's sad. There's so much cool stuff going on right now, and the tech press doesn't know how to talk about it anymore.
Is that a thing that a person can do
Is there a guide to setting up a local mastodon server?

How does the "filter by regular expressions" option work? Do I literally have to write a regex for what I want to search for?
