I recently upgraded from an X220 to an X1C5, but can’t stop thinking about how nice an X61s with the SXGA+ display from a tablet model and an LED backlight would be. 🤔💠#ThinkPad
@amdt what CPU does it have? If it's a reasonably modern Intel, there is no way of getting away from the management engine.
@loke Coreboot’s documentation says that whilst the Ethernet controller is capable of running the management engine it’s not configured to do so (🔗 https://www.coreboot.org/Intel_Management_Engine), and the X60 laptops were the first to be supported by Libreboot (🔗 https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Libreboot/ThinkPad_X60).
@amdt Libreboot still has to use the management engine blobs. No one knows what's inside that one.
@loke My understanding is that Libreboot has absolutely no support for the management engine, whilst Coreboot does. Am I missing something?
@amdt That is true, but on the other hand Libreboot can't be used on computers that were made after 2008 or something like that.
I did confuse Libreboot with Coreboot, which does support modern CPU's using the Intel blobs.
I'd like to use more modern computers, so Libreboot isn't really an option in my case.
@loke Yeah, it’s a shame that the benefit of more software freedom comes at such a large cost right now. I’ll probably stick with my modern computer for now.
Perhaps I should be considering an X60s, so that I can use Libreboot, and avoid proprietary firmware and Intel’s Management Engine entirely. 🤔ðŸ’
