#TwitterEvacuationDay #introductions
Windows admin, largish systems.
Cyclist, for transport, not sport.
Systems geek.
Cycling geek.
Photo geek.
Up late watching 34C3 on youtube.
How on earth does this all work then? Multiple sites etc? I guess you can follow people from other nodes? Yeah, I know I'm overthinking it, first Toot and all that. Anyway... Hello. 😀
@slipstream That looks really useful, thanks very much, I'll have a read. :)
@amigiac Welcome to Mastodon! You'll get used to it quite quickly! Essentially, each instance is it's own site, but each instance talks to the others, sharing posts and some other info between instances.
You might also be interested in #Aardwolf. It's aiming to be a federated replacement for Facebook, like Mastodon is for Twitter. We don't have a functional build yet, but we're working on it. https://aardwolf.social/
Thanks for the welcome @kd0bpv I'm getting used to it real quick, I'll keep an eye out for Aardwolf.
I'm surprised it took me this long to get around to signing up. It was watching the #34C3 videos and seeing Mastodon mentioned as contact info everywhere that made me realise I was missing out on something great.
@amigiac what’s up fellow cyclist for transport not sport
@amigiac Nice. Happy New Year. Still 3:45 left in this wretched year here in Seattle
@valrus Happy New Year from the future! London (UK) here. Have a good one, I'm all beered out.
@JordiGH Thanks very much, some good info there.
@amigiac
Welcome! I've had a dormant account for a while and just recently decided to invest more time here too.
@michel_slm thanks, I'm feeling very welcome so far. Pretty much got the hang of how everything works and having a great time reading toots and finding people to follow.
So are you an evil Windows server admin like me or one of the good guys? :D
@amigiac everything but Windows right now, I manage a mobile phone testing lab so it's Linux and Mac plus Android and iOS devices 😀
@michel_slm Interesting, I'm mostly building and supporting RDS and RemoteApp systems, some on Azure, but also Hyper-V and VMWare, it's all enterprise stuff. Amazing how many people want Windows apps on iPads delivered via Internet. All marketed as 'Cloud Apps'. I'm pretty much a general IT tech alongside that, phone systems, networks, BOFH stuff.
@amigiac - It’s just like email. I’m over at infosec.exchange and you’re at mastodon.social - But we can talk to each other. Yay!
@tinker thanks, I've learned a lot in those two days. This place is super helpful.
@amigiac - Oh it was two days! I apologize! Glad you’re enjoying it!
@amigiac Hello o/
@amigiac Welcome to the fediverse.
There are a number of good primers on Howe federation works and what the privacy settings mean and that which I'm sure a search engine will help you find. But if you have questions, just ask (me in specific or folks in general, both will probably work well).
@benhamill thanks. I think I've pretty much got the hang of it now. the last few days have been a pleasant surprise.
@amigiac Yeah, you more-or-less find folks on your instance (node/site) or other instances to follow, then your home & notifications columns start acting kind of like you were used to back on what's termed the "birdsite". There's also a local & federated timeline view which is the firehose of everything on your instance and instances yours is linked to, respectively.
Also, welcome! 😄
@amigiac hola! welcome to the 'verse.
