I kinda want to play around with a Mastodon instance without actually investing anything. I'm not sure if that's possible, though. I tried to run it locally via Docker and it failed. Could have been user error...

I don't _think_ there's currently an instance for my area (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill/Carrboro), and I think it would be a fun project to work on, even if I'm the only one there.

DigitalOcean looks like it would be easiest, but it doesn't have the latest version on the marketplace.

@amwelles Local instances + HUGE & v rapid user uptake are essential. Neither the fed feed nor the local feed have shown me a single toot of interest so far. The masto concept is great, but the reality is a sea o 'Internet' bollocks and billions of short term and abandoned accounts. Very unsustainable.

@amwelles use docker on a DigitalOcean VM to install the latest version.
