trying to write proposals and grants that have to do with my continuing research on zukofsky's _80 flowers_ and it's just... really hard. one of those things where in my head there's this clear crystalline silver strand connecting everything in this beautiful way but when I try to follow the strand with my hands on the keyboard, intending to make a map of the strand, I lose sight of it and nothing makes sense anymore

I just want the text of this application to be like... a video of me gesticulating at the book, pointing at the poems, then the camera goes to my face, and I'm making like this expression, 🤪 and pointing at my face, and then pointing at my laptop showing, like, tensorboard or something, and then the poems again, and then back to me all like 🤨

@aparrish sounds like why it's a research proposal -- connecting the strands is what the research will do right?

work frustration

@edsu true, but part of the difficulty is explaining why any of it is interesting and relevant to the funding organizations in question in the first place

work frustration

@aparrish maybe it will be useful to write about what you don’t already know, or what you would like to know — as absurd as that sounds.

work frustration

@aparrish <3

if i were a funding agency i would fund that.

work frustration

@ranjit @aparrish I might try to find a way to fund it anyway. It’s a good pitch

work frustration

@aparrish that sounds really cool... what’re you studying about 80 flowers?

work frustration

@goodleftyfundies I have this hunch that the "condensation" technique Zukofsky used to compose the poems can be modeled computationally using a convolutional neural network operating on word vectors. so I've been looking into sources and trying to get my plain-text transcript just right, tracking down which words are neologisms and which are just obscure (or compounds), etc. and a lot of futzing with tensorflow

work frustration

@aparrish that sounds really cool! If you modeled those poems it could have a lot of really interesting implications... what would you do with that model?

work frustration

@goodleftyfundies write new poems with it :) 80 goldfish, 80 pizza toppings, 80 canadian lakes...

work frustration

@aparrish nice! That’s what I was hoping! I think that could be a really cool way to demystify poetry and help people engage with it/ get into it

work frustration

@goodleftyfundies me too! now I just hope I can make that point convincingly in this proposal :)

work frustration

@aparrish lol thank you for talking to me about it with me in the meantime... good luck! It’s a really good idea!
