When I reply in English to a thread that’s in another language (like German), Mastodon assigns my post the language of the thread, even though I’ve written in English and set English as my default.

This means other users (e.g. German speakers) won’t see the “Translate” option, because Mastodon thinks my post is already in their language.

Is there a way to force my posts to always be in English unless I manually change it?

@aproposnix adopting the lang of the thread might depend on your client. (that threads only have 1 language seems like a bad assumption!) but also you should be able to set your replys language when replying?

maybe thread lang to higher priority than user default...

might be worth checking on the masto repo and opening an issue if it hasnt been discussed...

@aproposnix
When you are writing you have an option te select in which language you type. You can check and change it

@kaika1975 Yes, but it should default to the language that I have set in my settings. Not the language of the thread. I have had it happen MANY times where I would post only to realize I forgot to change it back to English.

It's a paper cut , for sure, but it's annoying.

@aproposnix

Un paramétrage de l’application ?@IceCubesApp

@aproposnix I use IceClub and there my default is French. But when I send if I didn’t change the language it asked me if I want to change it b

@aproposnix There is a button below the reply window with which you can choose your language.
