mastodon.social is one of the many independent Mastodon servers you can use to participate in the fediverse.

Server stats:

187K
active users

To gauge interactions per user on the Fediverse:

Let's assume MAU actually is 2,761,164 (according to the-federation.info)

Those users are making ~25,000 posts per hour (according to @mastodonusercount)

That is an absurd level of interaction in and of itself—but that doesn't even count boosts and likes.

Remember these are guesstimates—but I believe they're more accurate than not.

Considering the data above ⬆️

I'm guessing that 6.5 posts a month are made per Fediverse user.

Keep in mind these are just public posts—unlisted and private posts aren't being measured.

Comparatively, I'd love to know how many posts are made per Twitter user.

Posts in and of themselves don't measure engagement because... bots and spam.

But I also highly suspect that the Fediverse has less bots and spam than Twitter.

Call it a hunch.

But I also highly suspect that the Fediverse has less bots and spam than Twitter

Vague recollection of someone’s comment: “They created it. They love it and they will protect it to death. They won’t let their community turn into the ‘other’ site.”

@atomicpoet And it works because there's no Algorithm for bots and spam to game.
I've seen a few people asking for the Fediverse to have an Algorithm, and I think that, at least to a first approximation, it's safe to assume that anyone asking for that is a spammer.

@atomicpoet
I don't think it's a hunch, the moderation of each instance makes it hard for bots to abuse from the community.

@Andres @atomicpoet The fact that individual instances are empowered to reduce the reach of spam is crucial. Larger instances will probably wind up with some amount of spam internally if they can't moderate well enough, but it's hard to penetrate other instances with smaller, more engaged moderation teams.

@atomicpoet sure this hunch is true - but is it at least partly because that's where the users are (or at least have been historically)? Similar to the fact that there was more malware for windows 3.1 than class macOS

@atomicpoet Typically 5-10% of MAU on a social network will post. If that ratio holds true on Mastodon that would mean 35-65 posts per month per active Fediverse poster.

@mmccue Sounds like a near-accurate guesstimate.
