In an interview in Mint, @Mastodon founder @Gargron Rochko explains how his platform is coping with the sudden rise in Indian users, and why Indian law enforcement can do little to censor free speech on the platform.

All power to 👍

@Deepsealioness yes this is v important, the link to patreon for donations can be found below the page

A heads up to folks, this is not bird app, this is open source so each of the different instances you are in, there is someone else working for you to get this experience. I see lot of you asking for features and moderators, it’s pretty entitled I feel, they are funded by donation so pls try to donate to different instances you are in: for the number of folks we have brought in even if each of us pay 100 rupees, it will make huge difference . I will get information where we can donate

I like to clarify why we don’t have a verification system like the #birdsite with the blue thingy next to your name.

On the #fediverse or at least #Mastodon we all are equal. No person is ‘higher in ranks’ or better than everyone else, our point is exactly the opposite. We want equality right?

We have plenty of methods to prove who you are on other platforms, we don’t need a badge for that 😉 Ofcourse you can use it however you like but this would be the reason, I’ll hope you’ll understand

If the admins of Instance1 BLOCK Instance2, the users of Instance1 cannot interact the users of Instance2

If the admins of Instance1 SILENCE Instance2, the users of Instance1 can still privately follow and interact the users of Instance2, but those interactions (like boosts) will not be seen by the other users of Instance1

To be more clear: BLOCKING is used for instances that permits horrible things and behaviours and SILENCING is used for instances that your Instance tolerate but doesn't appreciate so much.

The same things are appliable to users.

Also you, as simple user, can decide to block or silence (for your eyes only) other users and entire Instances.

@neerjadeodhar there is no verification process (only for the websites you input and backlink), that's basically an emoji which works on few instances

Y'all like it here no? Now think about it, wouldn't it be nice if our governments and our companies ran like this, with those actually building them actually ran them, democratically and in a decentralised fashion, each group of workers controlling their own lives, with no value going to some parasitical "owner", without "bosses" and "masters"?

That is a dream worth building.

12.9K new users on this week. Don’t know off-hand how the numbers for the fediverse at large look

Twitter emerges as a top threat to democracy in India and across the world

The case of Sanjay Hegde is a turning point, making it clear that Twitter is aligning with authoritarian regimes that target dissenters.

@DilliDurAst writes

Changing the base changes the superstructure. The cultural difference y'all are feeling here isn't just people being nice to each other, it is because this platform has a different base structure and is relatively empty.

That could change. So this must be protected and constantly improved. So that the environment of all eat all the hellsite fell prey to can't happen here

1947 - Grandparents migrated from East Pakistan to .
1981 - Parents migrated from Meghalaya to Assam.
