Mozilla is shutting down their IRC servers and moving to Discord, a proprietary chat service.
Hey Mozilla, aren't we forgetting something here? Our very own "Mozilla Pledge for a Healthy Internet” states:
> Principle 2 The internet is a global public resource that must remain open and accessible.
> Principle 6 The effectiveness of the internet as a public resource depends upon interoperability (protocols, data formats, content), innovation and decentralized participation worldwide.

Web development is just a hobby of mine, I work in the auto industry.
I'm so proud of this project, I never would have imagined that I could make something like this.
Thank you for helping me realize credentialism isn't so important as you think. ❤️
I read the comments under the lwn post regarding how browsers treat the ping attribute on html anchors and saw people defending the ping attribute because the alternative is redirects. In other words, people will be tracked regardless, and the ping attribute is better tech (and a better "user experience"). How often do the people who work on these things ever take a step back and think to themselves, "Wait a minute. Am I just optimizing surveillance and tracking?"
This will probably have also repercusions for the #fediverse down the line...

I missed this when it came out a few months ago, but this is a great talk. I'm becoming more and more convinced that the problems of technology centralization can't be solved without antitrust. Tim Wu's recent book "The Curse of Bigness" also comes to mind here.
Why is the R community more inclusive than Python?
“Before Twitter, before algorithmic timelines filtered our reality for us, before surveillance capitalism, there was RSS: Really Simple Syndication … As we move away from the centralised web to the peer web, it’s time to rediscover, re-embrace, and reclaim RSS.”
#howto use the #fediverse with nearly no internet connection with #AndStatus:
Choose in the settings:
- to not fetch images
- to not fetch avatars
- increase the time of sync
Now next time you got internet connection, even if shitty as ~1kbs you can let AndStatus sync.
Also no problem if internet connection is just accessible for some minutes.
Messages get stored offline. You can read, fav., boost, and reply to them any given time. Once you've got internet again even you're replies will be sync.
