Always cool to be reminded of Moebius’ work, but can you imagine what Dune may have been like if this film version had come to fruition? “In 1975 the cartoonist Jean Giraud, a.k.a. Moebius, was in Paris collaborating with Alejandro Jodorowsky on the never-completed adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel Dune, a project that at various times involved H.R. Giger, Mick Jagger, Salvador Dalí, Orson Welles, Udo Kier, Gong, and Pink Floyd.“
Sometimes I love the German language for it's absolute simplicity. Seal in german is Seehund, or Sea-Dog. The large bats called Flying Foxes? Flughund. Flying Dog. The entire language looked at two separate animals and went,
"Well, that's a dog."
"But it has wings"
"And that one lives in the ocean"
"Sea Dog. They're dogs, Hans. Get with the program."
To be more transparent about server blocks, I have decided to follow the example of others and publish a list: https://github.com/Gargron/mastodon.social-misc/blob/master/README.md
That list is now linked from our about page. It also explains how different block severities work.
You might notice that bofa.lol is on the list. It's at the very least a temporary measure because our mods had to deal with a lot of problematic content coming from that place yesterday.

Due to popular demand, and the ever-increasing net to explain Mastodon to newbies as every instance is being bombarded with new users...
I've gone ahead and create a video tutorial that should help folks get to grips with all of this platform's particulars:
Intro to Mastodon 101
All you #data and #science types, a reminder that this is a thing: https://www.autodeskresearch.com/publications/samestats
Over the last few months I have been monitoring the alt-right online with @sinders. Here is a talk we gave at HOPE on the topic. https://livestream.com/internetsociety/hope/videos/178071778
advice for newer mastodon arrivals
Instances mainly matter for stability/moderation/trust purposes. A slightly (or wildly) different codebase and performance is an added benefit or difference.
When you're starting out it is hard to imagine that by following people across the fediverse you really are interacting with everyone.
I created lists for low frequency but interesting posters, my home timeline is so full of activity.
LIBRARIANS OF MASTODON (freakin' killer punk band name, by the way):
Check out Trunk, a list of Mastodon lists on Community Wiki! They've got lists of different people to follow on Mastodon but the GLAM lists are either pretty short or non-existent. Hit up the Wiki and get added to the list(s) of your choice!
Julia 1.0 is out https://julialang.org/blog/2018/08/one-point-zero, for those who haven't checked out the language and ecosystem, worth your time :)
Consider to move away from evil digital empires (like Google, FB...) and their mind farming agorithms and spywares. Found very useful guide from @Tutanota that can help you discover alternatives. #privacy #FOSS
