Would anyone who knows about university IT procurement be willing to educate me a little?

@kurtm I’m trying to learn more about how internet infrastructure choices are made, how often parts are replaced/upgraded, and what goals teams have (like how future-looking are they and do they try to do anything fancy/fun re: compute for research and the like)

@b_cavello Either "advocate for more people entering tech" or "advocate for better labor conditions in tech", I think.

@b_cavello Work within an organization for more support, tools, and rights for either an internal development team or an external community.

For ex, I know Apple has developer advocates on staff who work with the third party community to improve their apps and listings, store features, Xcode, etc.

My problem with economists is they’re exclusively interested in second-order effects and extremely proud of themselves for it. No amount of crushing embarrassment from inevitable 3rd, 4th+ effects seems to knock their self-image down even one notch.

At its peak, Theranos was valued at $10B. If the company had not been stopped, their flaky tests might have killed people--we may never know the true extent of the damage they did do to people's lives. At the heart of the story are self-delusion, blind ambition, paranoia, infatuation.
