I've just uploaded the recording of my @fosdem talk "Mental Health and Free Software" to my (brand new!) @peertube instance, feel free to go have a look if you've missed it or want to watch it again 😀

It's BACK! After a hiatus in January, we're back with a great lineup this Wednesday! Hear @mattdm@twitter.com from @fedora@twitter.com discuss Linux on the Desktop (what else!?), @AlexSiman@twitter.com presents @SubsocialChain@twitter.com, PLUS learn about how Matrix powered #fosdem/#fosdem21! matrix.org/open-tech-will-save

@bjoern @matrix

As far as Element is concerned, this is a bit blocked on bandwidth right now, though of course any other client's developer can implement support for this independently since the feature is mostly using already existing infrastructure (i.e. reading and changing the state of a room).

@bjoern @matrix

Thanks!

Yes, the next step is to add support for this feature in clients so users would have an interface to visualise and change the retention policy for every room (and maybe eventually do some more funky stuff like setting default policies for new room they create and so on).

What's this? It's a new blog post!

In today's big wall of text, I take a deep dive into the implementation of the support for message retention policies in @matrixdotorg@twitter.com, more specifically into Synapse, its reference homeserver implementation 😀

BIG NEWS: Huge welcome to @gitchat@twitter.com, who are entering Matrix!! Gitter is moving from @gitlab@twitter.com to @element_hq@twitter.com & building the ultimate Matrix bridge, showcasing how a large chat app can natively talk Matrix, while bringing Gitter goodness to Element! 🚀🌉🎉 matrix.org/blog/2020/09/30/wel

It's a browser extension that recommends "better" alternative products and services via in-page popups, based on community-curated lists. Available for all Chromium and Firefox-based browsers.

We live in times where the distributions costs are hampering the adoption of higher-quality (which could mean security, privacy, ethics, local etc) products. I am hoping that this extension can eventually be managed by orgs like IFF, EFF or FSF.

Here we are, a new Synapse release candidate for you. v1.14.0rc1 contains OpenID Connect support, improved cache tuning and room version 6. Check it out and help us test. github.com/matrix-org/synapse/

New blog post! It's a quick overview over the different keys involved in #matrix 's new cross signing. jcg.re/blog/quick-overview-mat

Zoom acquired Keybase today.

Keybase helped me to identify a trend in the software industry: using a pretty UI to cover up the disruption of an open ecosystem with a closed, centralized replacement. Keybase seemed cool on the face of it - making encryption easier is a laudible goal, and PGP certainly could use the improvement. But, thanks to Keybase, now I ask different questions upfront.

Beware the Keybase formula:

1. Integrates with an existing, open ecosystem
2. May have open-source clients, but server is closed source and does not federate
3. Pretty UI and good marketing
4. VC funded

Currently playing around with the P2P @matrixdotorg@twitter.com demo with @neilalexander@twitter.com and @turt2live@twitter.com, come see it live at #FOSDEM tomorrow at 14:30 in the Decentralised Internet and Privacy devroom!

I need a ride to Leipzig from either Brussels or Frankfurt tonight for #36c3. Missed my train in London but getting another one. I'll be at Bruxelles Midi at 18:02 or Frankfurt Hbf at 21:31. This is anoa from @matrix
#matrix btw :)

Boosts greatly appreciated!

Amnesty International calls Google and Facebook a threat to human rights. We believe that centralization of power in hands of #GAFAM is indeed extremely dangerous. #privacy #decentralization matter for a free society!
