So, what I’m taking from this “Founder Mode” discourse—without reading the original post, because fuck Paul Graham—is that tech companies generally have awful management, because tech execs are themselves awful, because the companies are founded by assholes who are incapable of managing others or hiring people who are good at managing others?

@baldur You could put it another way - the skills and personal attributes necessary to found a company are distinct from and incompatible with the skills and personal attributes necessary to run a large company.

That's why "serial entrepreneurs" are a thing. They start a company, grow it a bit, and then if they're sensible exit and hand it over to professionals to run.

@baldur My company has failed to grow enough to be worth anyone buying, which I put down to not having been enough of an arsehole =)

@bencurthoys @baldur This is exactly what my wife says. She has been involved with several companies that the founders could not let go, take a bow, a wand of cash, and go away at the right time. The talents needed to found a company are not the talents needed to run a company after it reaches a certain size. Very few can do both.
