Has anybody on here used "Briar" app? I am looking at its viability in the situation of internet shutdowns in India which are way too frequent and highest in the world.

From their website,
"Briar doesn’t rely on a central server - messages are synchronized directly between the users’ devices. If the internet’s down, Briar can sync via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, keeping the information flowing in a crisis. If the internet’s up, Briar can sync via the Tor network"

Alan Moore on superhero films (1/2):

I think the impact of superheroes on popular culture is both tremendously embarrassing and not a little worrying. While these characters were originally perfectly suited to stimulating the imaginations of their twelve or thirteen year-old audience, today’s franchised übermenschen, aimed at a supposedly adult audience, seem to be serving some kind of different function, and fulfilling different needs. Primarily, mass-market superhero movies seem to be abetting an audience who do not wish to relinquish their grip on (a) their relatively reassuring childhoods, or (b) the relatively reassuring 20th century. The continuing popularity of these movies to me suggests some kind of deliberate, self-imposed state of emotional arrest, combined with an numbing condition of cultural stasis that can be witnessed in comics, movies, popular music and, indeed, right across the cultural spectrum...

I still like to think the current high appeal of superhero media (on the mass consumer side, at least) is probably more due to people fantasising about having any power at all to change unjust situations.
The alternative is that people are glorifying what basically amount to superpowered cops with no oversight and thinking that does not make me feel good at all.

I agree with everything you say. Except, I'm not sure exactly how much hacked EVMs helped the bjpee in 2019.

With the paper trails NOT matching in 370 out of 540 seats - and the absolute silence of the EC, this looks like a big factor! In such matters, I think it is up to the accused to prove their innocence, for, stealing votes ranks right at the top of the list of Most Heinous Crimes!!

Next time you cry about "lawlessness" in the country, remember how you turned your backs on students getting beaten up for protesting fee hike. Remember how you sided with the establishment in their attempt to make education inaccessible to the poor.

Mastodon can't be compared to anonymous forums like hacker news and reddit. They are far more equal than this we have here. Also, local and federated timelines are useless, on top of the that you are one wrong touch or click away from porn being shoved into your face on these timelines.

Ihis is a really good video that I recommend highly, and I agree with about 90% of it. It's a great introduction to the leftist view of political ideology and, especially, materialism. Thanks to the other comrades who have posted it!

But, that said, I think that it stumbles in two related areas that classical Marxist throught often stumbles in: namely, false consciousness and culture wars/identity politics. I think it's worth elucidating these two, why they're related, and why it's wrong to suggest that all reactionary ideology among workers is the result of false consciousness.

So just briefly: false consciousness is the idea that people have an ideology that's directly opposed to their material interests essentially because they've been propagandized. The best example of this is anyone who makes less than six figures arguing for a tax cut on billionaires. They will not gain anything from this materially, will almost certainly be harmed by it in the form of reduced services to pay for it, and yet you can find these people everywhere. Why?

To answer this question, it's worth changing topics for a second, and talking about race. Specifically, whiteness.

Bhaukaal boosted

The classical Marxist theory about race is that it's false consciousness. By dividing the white worker from the black worker, you foster hatred between the two groups and prevent them from working together. And indeed if you go back to the very beginnings of racism in the 16th and 17th century, you can find people making this argument almost explicitly.

But it's simply not the whole picture. For one, whiteness pays a wage. There is an actual, material interest in maintaining a racist heirarchy for white people, because we are paid more than any other ethnic group. This is the argument that often gets trotted out against affirmative action, as one example.

Bhaukaal boosted

I'm circling back to one of my favorite writers, Corey Robin, and his definiton of conservatism: "A meditation on--and theoretical rendition of--the felt experience of having power, seeing it threatened, and trying to win it back."

This is what the poor white person has in common with the billionaire: having power, and seeing it threatened. It's the common thread behind reactionary ideology from bathroom bills to bank deregulation. It's not false consciousness at all. It's a true expression of having held social power and refusing to admit that that power might be illegitimate.

Bhaukaal boosted

You might argue that there will be more to be gained if you erase racism and focus on the real shared enemy, the bourgeoisie, and you'd certainly be right, but you'd be missing a key component of what's happened here.

Namely, someone who has no power in the economic sphere has been given the right to have power in a social sphere. In other words, they sit at the top of a different hierarchy now. Sure, they don't currently have anything to gain from lowering billionaire taxes, but that's not the point. They now have a vested interest in *maintaining hierarchies exactly as they are.*

Because if being a billionaire is illegitimate, then whiteness might be illegitimate, and then the whole social order around which they've built their lives might crumble.

Ah this is a good place to sly all the people who are listing "3 Idiots" among their favourite films. It was such a terrible, pretentious, bullshit film. Raju Hirani has a talent for comedy but squandered it all at the altar of preachiness. (Compare Munnabhai 1 and 2). And 3 Idiots was the apotheosis of preachy Raju Hirani. To make matters worse whenever anyone hears I quit law to be a photographer they all say "oooh, like 3 Idiots!" and I have to smile and say "yes yes, uncle, just like that".
