STEAMBOAT WILLIE

@blogdiva man, I'd forgotten how much animal cruelty is in that

@KateOfMind it's Disney. there is no amount of death and violence that fawning Hitlerbro didn't like in this cartoons

@blogdiva Too right. We're still kind of living in his and Henry Ford's world, aren't we?

@KateOfMind @blogdiva sadly part of it is reflective: how this passed for (non-gallows at that) humor in that time in the US shows just how bad we were

Even though progress is for the most part a lie (and easily reversed if it does happen) I do find it slightly encouraging that the same content would get something at least marked as edgy dark "adult humor" if put in something modern, and there'd be at least a PETA protest if not ASPCA complaining - not entirely normalized as all-audiences etc

@KateOfMind @blogdiva e.g. this is the sort of thing that would make controversy, at least, now, if presented as okay and funny without context and ratings etc even among normies (and not just in fandom discourse spaces etc), and that's a very good thing. One little positive way society has changed since those days

@blogdiva Dammit! I just paid $7.99 to stream this on Prime Video!

@blogdiva My first time to watch this and Disney made no money.

@blogdiva
I am choosing to believe that this is an omen of good things to come this year.

@blogdiva me before watching: i suppose it's inevitable someone's gonna make something pretty fucked up out of his.
me after watching: oh never mind it already is

@blogdiva I remember being excited to track down Steamboat Willie along with other early animated shorts on rented VHS cassettes, back when it was hard to find such things. I watched again on YouTube, now and then - when I was quick enough before the inevitable takedown notice. And now, it's finally freely available with no hassles. Good!

These don't look like much compared to modern animation, but it's fascinating to watch a young art form grow. I love the exuberance, the absurdity, the playfulness. Less attractive elements (eg casual cruelty to cartoon animals, the racist origins of the song Turkey in the Straw) are part of the historical record as well. It's important to understand where we came from.

So hooray for #PublicDomainDay! It should have become available years sooner, but at least it happened eventually.

@blogdiva Holy shit, it started cute and funny and turns into a horrormovie 😞 wtf

@blogdiva

Superb. I've never seen it before.

@blogdiva

I’m now in the process of raising $25 million from Yahoo (they gave Mark Cuban $5.7 billion for his shitty internet sports radio network, so they’ll buy anything) for a big budget remake of this classic film, just like Walt would have wanted:

@RodneyPetersonTalent i saw Bambi vs. Godzilla here in NYC at one of its first screenings as part of the Mike and Ike animation festival.

it may have been the first screening of Luxor, Pixar’s lamp animation.

i cant believe we don't have an archive of those animation festivals.

without Mike and Ike i would had not seen the first Simpson's, Pixar’s Tin Toy, Plimptoons and the first Wallace & Grommit short. that festival was legendary.

@blogdiva A heartwarming story of music, boat travel, and animal abuse.

@blogdiva
Wow, early Mickey was violence incarnate

@blogdiva
Steamboat throwin' dat ass gave me a giant chortle.
