was finally asleep when the smell of burning wood hit me. woke up, ran to the kitchen, checked my heated blanket, checked all the rooms.
apparently there are fires in some New Jersey forests and the wind is blowing so hard we are getting hit by the smoke.
a 2025 #fediverse #Mastodon priority should be to rebuild the PSA megaphone we lost with #Xitter. not just for USA but the world over. look at happened in Valencia. we need country channels.
ok, back to sleep.
STAY SAFE NEW JERSEY!
@blogdiva this what the lose of Twitter impacts, it was so local, so connected to Emerg services etc. - Musk decimated what actually is an essential service
@blogdiva It's only near the Palisades right?
@blogdiva
Someone needs to solidly fund a #Mastodon instance for this kind of thing: hurricanes, bushfires, floods, storms, blizzards and so on.
A couple of tech millionaires/billionaires could club together and establish a rock-solid server with a decade of uptime and a petabyte of storage in a couple of days. They'd be remembered forever. Instead they're buying entire Hawaiian islands, building bunkers, and preparing to watch the rest of us die.
@negative12dollarbill may I suggest you check out @ai6yr feed? He and his network have hearts of gold trying to keep folks safe.
@kellyromanych @negative12dollarbill @blogdiva Thanks Kelly! I'm not a tech billionaire (crowdfunded here) but my server is essentially hurricanes, bushfires/wildfires/floods/storms/blizzards 24-7. https://m.ai6yr.org/public/local
@ai6yr @kellyromanych @negative12dollarbill i did not know that!
@blogdiva sadly a lot of the Australian services are still only Xitter. I do have an app though with local fire warnings, it’s pretty cool because I can define locations like home and brother’s home and get alerts for a defined radius around there. Probably better
@blogdiva When I lived in Cincinnati in the early 1990s, we woke up to the smell of smoke and haze everywhere. Turns out it was smoke from forest fires in MEXICO. It's crazy how far forest fire smoke can travel in the right conditions.
@blogdiva It would be good to have a standard for for geography hashtags. There are Cambridge and CambridgeUK hashtags, for example, but who knows what the first one means (is it the one in Ontario? The one in Massachusetts?) and the second one probably means the one I live in, but there are two places called Cambridge in the UK. Something like {ISO country code}.{state,county,province,department,whatever}.{city,town,village,whatever}, where the middle one is country-specific, might make sense. With a little bit of per-country code, mobile apps could check the location and say ‘Based on your location, you might be interested in subscribing to the uk, uk.Cambridgeshire, and uk.Cambridgeshire.Cambridge hashtags for local events’.
@david_chisnall @blogdiva
The "." breaks the hashtag. "_" works.
#US_NY_Brooklyn
@xris @david_chisnall that is fantastic. TIL. thanks.
@blogdiva The Watch Duty app is super helpful, particularly here in California.
@LShashaty 100% and and they have added states through incredible volunteerism.
