Our member project, Git, will add a feature for users to choose the initial branch name via git init. More in the announcement:

Blerp. Reminds me of (among other things) folks working on a music tech hackathon to "help deaf people" who could not fathom that I had run hackathons, was an engineer, a musician... and deaf. Or the dude who kept insisting I was either not deaf or not the course instructor.

Anyway - it's ridiculous that Open Tech Fund , one of the few organizations that aids the sustainability of foundational free and open source projects, is under threat of being dismantled and its funding redirected, including to closed-source projects.
