That jab in the Forbes piece about how "Mastodon" is a bad name (because it's an extinct animal!) is really funny to me because part of the appeal of Mastodon is the fact that it's not the product of the sort of organization that thinks about those things.
It harkens back to an era in the internet, and in computing, where things were named by whoever was making them based on personal whimsy, rather than being the product of a focus group.
