this paper is really interesting (and explains a lot)

“we hypothesize that status threat—in which dominant cultural groups are threatened by social progress and seek a return to the hierarchy of the status quo ante—serves to motivate contemporary reactionary American politics”

Burrito Justice

this even explains why car brains look upon bike lanes as such a threat — loss of status of their beloved auto superiority

@burritojustice There's a huge amount of male ego tied to cars (at least, in the US). What You Drive = Who You Are (at least, culturally). And although I don't think it actually works, What You Drive Makes You Desirable To The Opposite Sex is part of the culture of growing up in the US. Even if it's not necessarily true. (thus, explaining all the 80 year olds around here driving Corvettes... which were the sexy car when they were teenagers, but now make me think "old guy with thinning hair")

@burritojustice
It depends upon the source of the "car brains".
Mobileye 4 can detect and avoid bike lanes through Level 3. Mobileye 6 can "secure" bike lanes through Level 4.
As far as I can tell, the others don't talk about it...which, to me, tells me they haven't addressed them.
I know that Mobileye 4 can avoid transit lanes and trams.

As a cyclist who also uses the car quite a bit I took a very pragmatic approach here: no matter what vehicle I currently use, everyone else sucks and can’t drive! 😜
