Found this while servicing an air compressor that was seizing. Not sure what to make of this, I don't think it's the cause but might be the result of over heating. Could also be a casting defect, while not as bad, it is visible on both sides. Because this is the oil pan and it's vented it's probably not even a big deal.

I just thought, maybe it's chemical. I know sodium hydroxide will etch the oxide layer from aluminum, I wonder if improper oil could contain something harmful.
