I don’t see anyone saying we should give up on science even though it’s been used to legitimize slavery and ethnic cleansing. If anything this should help us improve science, by making it clear what happens when some groups are systematically disempowered, silenced, and excluded from scientific discourse. Same goes with identity politics.

The thing about capitalism is that unless it is stopped it inevitably leads to fascism, war, genocide, planetary collapse. It is not a system that can ever be "stable" as it only ever functions if there is growth, and has fundamental internal limits to that growth from the start.
This isn't really a "political opinion" in the sense of an idea about how the world "should" be. It's just a conclusion that you can arrive at through study & analysis of economics & sociology.
in that sense, we see plainly that, even in countries that enshrine "freedom of speech" in their fundamental legislation, no such thing exists in practice; "speech" and public discourse can be dictated by whoever owns the greatest share of the media, and used in their own naked self-interest. there are no real legal provisions against this. in this sense, only a socialist position (common ownership and democratic control of of the means of communication) is truly "pro-free speech".
i'm going to lay out this entire speech argument here, as i see it, just so i can say i've done my due dilligence. much like the "under communism you're not allowed to have your own toothbrush" property argument, it's rarely posed in anything resembling good faith. in practice, free speech cannot be disentangled from "freedom of the press", that is, in today's terms, the question of who controls the means of communication.
@accelerando ppl can say what they want about castro but the progress cuba's made since their revolution is almost inconceivable considering the obstacles they've faced. Not sure where to start but this article is p good: http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2016/11/cloneofcloneoffidel-castro-context-2014331257121-161126054211145.html
