I don’t see anyone saying we should give up on science even though it’s been used to legitimize slavery and ethnic cleansing. If anything this should help us improve science, by making it clear what happens when some groups are systematically disempowered, silenced, and excluded from scientific discourse. Same goes with identity politics.

Saying fascists/conservatives misuse identity politics to do harm so we should abandon identity politics is like saying we should give up on engineering because some engineers design bad bridges that collapse and kill people.

The thing about capitalism is that unless it is stopped it inevitably leads to fascism, war, genocide, planetary collapse. It is not a system that can ever be "stable" as it only ever functions if there is growth, and has fundamental internal limits to that growth from the start.
This isn't really a "political opinion" in the sense of an idea about how the world "should" be. It's just a conclusion that you can arrive at through study & analysis of economics & sociology.

in that sense, we see plainly that, even in countries that enshrine "freedom of speech" in their fundamental legislation, no such thing exists in practice; "speech" and public discourse can be dictated by whoever owns the greatest share of the media, and used in their own naked self-interest. there are no real legal provisions against this. in this sense, only a socialist position (common ownership and democratic control of of the means of communication) is truly "pro-free speech".

i'm going to lay out this entire speech argument here, as i see it, just so i can say i've done my due dilligence. much like the "under communism you're not allowed to have your own toothbrush" property argument, it's rarely posed in anything resembling good faith. in practice, free speech cannot be disentangled from "freedom of the press", that is, in today's terms, the question of who controls the means of communication.

@accelerando ppl can say what they want about castro but the progress cuba's made since their revolution is almost inconceivable considering the obstacles they've faced. Not sure where to start but this article is p good: aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/

also I tooted some films that can be good for catching up a bit: mastodon.social/users/DrSkippe

when you talk about the objective facts of schools, healthcare, living standards, justice, and they tell you to listen to the "lived experience" of some expat motherfucker in miami whose dad had a whites-only casino in havana, well, then you know they truly have nothing to stand on

btw my take on what the mickey mouse meme image is "saying" is that if your materialism leads you to some kind of complacent nihilism instead of an active ethical engagement with the world then that's a shit materialism m8

My partner is encouraging me to write a pamphlet called "Marxist Men Leaving Dirty Dishes Lying Around: An Infantile Disorder." I consider this to be one of the major perks of our relationship.
