The surgeon general's warning about youth and social media is an absolute feast for people interested in the effects of tech and society https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/sg-youth-mental-health-social-media-advisory.pdf
@caseynewton Which is more detrimental to children? Social media exposure to liars, frauds and those who might exploit them, or the existence of the Republican party and Christianity's child-rapist priests and youth pastors? When will the Surgeon General stop playing games and address the real problems facing children - the adults in power?
@caseynewton
I saw the NYTimes article about the USSG’s advisory. He’s asking for research into the causative effects damaging kids. I confess, my first thought was he would advocate new regulations on social media. That’s not the case.
There’s ample evidence social media is damaging. It’s damaging for adults, too. But kids are particularly vulnerable. We don’t know why. We need to find out why — how the brain changes because of social media exposure.
@caseynewton Unfortunately, it's about 10 or 15 years too late.
