This wired article ( ) about Mastodon is mostly good. It covers the basic features and talks about a shift from Twitter to Mastodon.

It confuses one key issue though, and that’s the “culture” of Mastodon.

What we’re seeing now across the Fediverse are the first adopters. The fringe. The queer. The hackers. The staunch individualists. The communal care takers.

As Mastodon becomes more mainstream, the “culture” will shift.

If you’re here for the culture, be wary... 1/2

Did you know that you don't need to use link shorteners (, etc.) on Mastodon? All links, no matter how long, only count for 23 characters against your 500 limit!

(And since link shorteners are bad for user experience and break the web, there's almost no good reason to use 'em! 😄)

@graffen Are you doing any kind of low-key promotion for mastodon at ? Casually urging people to join and so forth? Thought maybe it could be a chance to get a lot of the great people at that are using Twitter to at least try it out. Just a thought :)

I'm fascinated by bizarre bug stories.

This one (retold by my ex-Linden-Lab-colleague Mark Ferlatte) happened in the mid-2000s.

The chain of decisions that made this possible could make a book-sized history of computing.

But if you only take one lesson: please, validate your inputs.

We just published a Snowden document from 2006 about NSA successfully breaking the encryption and spying on VPNs run by Al Jazeera, the Iraqi military, airlines and reservation systems, and other "high potential" targets

Hey . When you post pictures, please please please with puppies on top fill in that description box for the visually impaired. You will be helping us out tremendously. We want to enjoy your pictures as much as others do. You don't have to write a novel, but just fill in some details.

Thanks with much love:

I saw a toot earlier about not flooding the introductions hashtag if you're an old user, so that new users don't get lost in the noise.

Suggestion: leave the #introductions hashtag for new users, and use #reintroductions for us long-term users making posts for newbies deciding who to follow.

@graffen I slept outside under the canopie of our terrace (as I have done for the last couple of weeks) in the weather yesterday, and although it was a bit windy and splashy, it was a great and beautiful night!

The thing to remember is that at some point in recent past nobody knew what e-mail was and people had to learn about. And before that personal computers were new and folks had to learn how to use them.

Not everything can be reduced to what you already know! Mastodon requires a tiny bit of extra knowledge because it differs from other social media platforms.

There's two Bruce Lee quotes that always stuck with me:

1.For it is easy to criticize and break down the spirit of others, but to know yourself takes a lifetime.

2.WooOOOO AHHhhh EeeeeeEeeeee *kick to that Russian dudes neck at the end of Fist of Fury* haaAAAA.

I just published an article that describes in technical detail how Russia executed their attacks on the US election, how they got caught, and what capabilities the US appears to have.

What Mueller's Latest Indictment Reveals About Russian and U.S. Spycraft

I have this idea i want to share. Been looking into how to program mastodon bots, and it's really approachable. But instead of doing it alone i thought it would be fun to do together. So, i was thinking about doing a social/mad scientisty meetup where we build and experiment with mastodon bots. It can also be a nice way to get started with programming. What do you think? 😸🤖 #botlab

@ThomasTuxTech Det var et godt interview der kom ud af det. Jeg har lige lyttet det igennem.😉

Mention of statutory rape

The Icelandic government collapsed a few days ago. Bright Future and the Reform Party left the coalition with the Independence Party, after a scandal involving the Minister of Justice and the Prime Minister about the "restoration of honour" for people convicted of statutory rape. More to come...
