instances.mastodon.xyz lists 326 nodes with over 123,000 combined users. Incredible
Took the family to the snow yesterday.
^ Mastodon doesn't have to steal twitters users to kill twitter. All it has to do is point at What Could Have Been. From that point on, Twitter will kill itself through more and more poor decisions made without the People Who Cared.
^ Twitter sold its soul to venture capital. There's powerful people inside twitter who believe that it can't afford the luxury of user-centered design. It has to make a huge return for the investors. They will follow the dollars. As the voices for user-centered decisions fade, so will twitter continue to ever more rapidly treat its users as a commodity instead of a treasure.
I can guarantee you there are basically only two reactions inside of twitter to mastodon:
1. Complete smugness about how hard this problem is and how completely certain they are that this federation will fail to scale.
2. People who see the decisions Mastodon has made and feel in their heart that twitter has failed to achieve the vision they had for it. They see an existential threat and will be completely disregarded by those with the first reaction. Many of these people will quit.
@drwho I've been programming for almost 30 years so let me disavow you of the notion that that ever changes.
My advice to new mastodon servers: get help from people with experience moderating other communities. It's the best predictor of survival
Citation: online communities with moderators who gained experience elsewhere are more likely to survive over time: https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/553b/7315936e49f98b18a37c4937a9170edab096.pdf
Last boost was not necessarily an endorsement but I do think it's inevitable.
But let's be clear that when those people organize whether it be on 4chan or reddit or wherever it creates harassment in other spaces. Somehow we have to reckon with this. I don't know how.
So lets be clear here...
The end game for mastodon is Pirate/Troll instances in their own little blocked network.
There is no way this will not happen, and I would actually call this the most accurate success metric.
We will know we have won when we have a healthy ecosystem of trolls... in a separate network... in a box... far away from me.
Here's my prediction for mastodon:
* wave of new users, most will go back to twitter
* enough will stay to keep things interesting and development will proceed apace.
* Valid feedback will be iterated on. instance-independent Identity, federated search, instance migration, performance tuning and bug fixes, etc.
* As it matures, it will grow.
Ultimately, a focus on keeping the community welcoming and easing the barriers to adoption will pay off.
^ I started dressing nicer at work in the last 6 months or so. After losing ~100 pounds I really enjoy looking nice and not trying to hide my body inside baggy clothes. In the past I would dress up as a "dress for success" sort of thing but now I just do it because it feels good.
I bought new socks because black socks are boring af.

This okcupid profile make me laugh.
There are NO checkmark verifications on this instance or any other. People just put emoji in their display names for a joke
Oh hey, @Gargron, mastodon uses my open source project :) so in a way I've already contributed to it

OkCupid questions need an importance of "deal breaker".
okay as long as there continues to be an influx of new users, i'm going to continue to repeat myself:
PSA: please please please put flashy/strobing graphics behind a CW. please also consider not using rapidly changing/flashing/twitchy userpics. they can trigger migraines and seizures, and are often just generally annoying to have in the corner of your eye. we can make masto more accessible for everyone, kay? thanks. <3
My timeline seems to sort by `updated_at`, but I thought it was supposed to be `created_at`. If someone star's one of my tweets, it sorts back to the top of my timeline. seems like a bug to me.
idk maybe its just that okcupid has it as a default but there's an awful lot of poly people on okcupid who are looking for single people.
that's not how any of this works.
