Reading: Damn Fine Story (@chuckwendig) and The Stars Are Legion (@KameronHurley)
Working on: $dayjob, then back to timelining the epic four-volume SF story. Also got a short story messing with my brain, trying to escape. Maybe a long-overdue blog post.

#wip For #NaNoWriMo I tried to train a neural net to write the 1st line of a novel, but only had 1000 entries, most of which were Bulwer-Lytton contest winners. It didn't go well:

"Stop! I caused the Narguuse man who was new on Alabama, the screaming constipated eggs."

Now I'm crowdsourcing a larger dataset. Enter the 1st line of a novel/short story (I have 7700 already!) & at the end of the month I'll try again.

Just ate cheese called "Red Witch." It smelled like a corpse's mouth. It tasted like buttery delight. The aftertaste was like I was licking a cow's udder. A very weird experience going on in my face right now.

He answered the door to find a stranger there, spittle dripping from their hard, determined face.

“Are you Jim?” the stranger asked him.

“...Yes.”

The stranger dropped two objects at his feet; one a black eye mask, the other a square of torn red textile.

“What is this?”

“The Lone Ranger’s Mask and the piece of Superman’s cape I tugged,” the stranger replied. “Now prepare to be messed around with...Jim.”

“Listen, I don’t know—“

“NO ONE TELLS ME WHAT TO DO!” the stranger thundered.

@Mjm @gannet @chuckwendig it’s worth noting that the most polished, twitter-like experience you’ll get is on Mastodon.social.

ie, they work really hard to have no downtime and do maintenance silently in the background. The Wandering Shop is a smaller operation, and we do take occasional downtime to do maintenance, like the websites of old.

I think we have a more focused, welcoming community, but YMMV.

so, when you post on mastodon, right?

the post below your post is a post made *slightly before* you posted

it's fucking revolutionary, every social media should do this

Chuck Wendig boosted

@chuckwendig though that's probably more valuable to those of us with a more even follower/following ratio than big-time ppl like yourself :P

@chuckwendig might be a bit stockholm-syndrome-ish, but the longtime masto users are definitely used to the whole "hey I'm @so-and-so@such-and-such.cats now, plz follow me there" pattern.

For mutuals, it's super easy bc you would export your following list from your original account, and import it into your new account, then those who you follow who want to follow your new account have a single click in the UI to follow your new account, no hassle

@chuckwendig this doesn’t counter the rest of your arguments, but @phildini wrote a blog post a few months ago talking about having made wandering.shop in part as a place for SFF writers; today is #wip Wednesday there. So it might be an SFF instance, but it’s in the category of a convention - which is for writers as well as readers.

The Shop has definitely gotten rather more populated in the last couple of days, but it’s still open to new accounts.

Speaking of which, gotta get back to this big-ass book, WANDERERS, which is now 1050 pages in MS Word, and 244,552 words.
