I shouldn't have mentioned emacs. 😩 I don't care if you use emacs, vim, or telegraph your code line by line and indent using sandwhiches

Bonjour tout le monde !
Newbie ici...

This is not even my final form.

Official account of the Mastodon project. News, releases, announcements. All in micro-blog form!

🎺 Toot toot! 🎺

Spread the news, it's legit, @maloki and @Gargron boost to prove it!

Microblog (in 5 parts) inc. soon!

And now, for something completely different... I wonder how many of you still remember Gopher?

I finally migrated an old project on ist new server, and gopher:// is now online and should be more stable than last year.

Yes, you'll need Lynx or Firefox + OverbiteFF add-on to visit it...

We're not ready to open to the public, yet, but if having your own Gopherhole takes your fancy, just ping me and I'll get back in touch!

A global open social network based on interest is context collapse taken to the absolute extreme. You are designing something from the ground up to accommodate any interest, any type of discourse, any tone of interaction, _in the same space_. You can do that but preventing these conflicting societies from eating each other like cannibals on a highway pile-up can't be done without deliberate balkanisation.

My 2 cents. IMHO. Etc.

Interesting how tech keeps looking for ever more complex solutions that simultaneously try to fix existing broken systems & preserve them.

Like a lot of the abuse mitigation discussion on Mastodon is basically: how can we keep a Twitter-like system (public by default, anybody can reply or send a message to you) while still preventing abuse?

Basically: how can we preserve the open, rotting cesspool but somehow make it not a cesspool? Make it not stink without changing the smell?

My personal opinion: abuse is baked into the core design of Twitter. A social media network that is structured around people's personal interests will inevitably run headlong into the fact that the primary interest of a lot of people is to literally destroy others. For fun. Add to that the ability to @ anybody and reply to any toot and each user has limited ability to police their own space you get a fertile ground for abuse.

There's a little movement in the head, but I had only a sec or two to get the shot in poor light.

This is an Antechinus. It is a tiny marsupial with the peculiar habit that after mating, the successful males die (it's quite the frenzy apparently). Or to put it another way, they go out with a bang.

@maloki aye
there is a saying: you write the introduction twice. first for yourself, to get a feel what you're gonna do. then you rewrite it at the end, when you know what you've done and what it actually introduces

This is Wendy Carlos, who is a composer and one of the pioneers of electronic music.

She was involved in the development of the Moog Synthesizer and helped to establish the Synthesizer as a proper musical instrument in the public eye.

Her most wildly known works are her soundtracks for the Stanley Kubrick's films "A Clockwork Orange" and "The Shining".

As you can tell from the pictures she's not only a huge nerd but also very fond of cats. #transhistory

A short, useful Italian phrase that you whisper about half an hour before the inspiring German word Feierabend and the beautiful French word apéro to all around you:

Allora, venite anche voi?

🇬🇧 Since some of you asked if you could support, I've set up a Liberapay account. But do not feel obliged to pay anything! I can afford this as a hobby for now. 😉

Aaand... is back on its feet. Have fun!

And May the 4th be with you. Always.
