At a time where the vulnerability of relying on US digital infrastructure and cloud services is huge, our AlgoSoc program pilot to rely on European cloud services is more relevant than ever.
Alternatives are not easy. But necessary.
@claesdevreese Your testing should go beyond Nextcloud:

@sbb @claesdevreese yes, and for many reasons.
@claesdevreese @wlaatje Is it already possible for us to join? Amsterdam University College is part of the University of Amsterdam?
Unfortunately, I have to disappoint you for now. The AlgoSoc consortium is an existing multi-year research consortium. They conduct research on the algorithmic society with about 70 researchers from five institutions, SURF will provide the Nextcloud environment for their use.
There is enthusiasm across NL to work with or experiment with Nextcloud. It is important to make sure that this interest is communicated, (especially!) within your own organizations.
@claesdevreese The time to experiment is over.
It’s time to stop the bleeding first. Then to count the losses, mourn the dead, regroup and refocus — moving forward again, taking the initiative.
The main focus should then be open technology, stuff interacting in conformance to an open specification. Services as components, freely interchanged at will. Signing on as codeveloper for the stuff you live off, and open sourcing it helps so much there. Build communities, not companies.

The digital defense of the EU! A Columbus EGG! Future financing of necessary extra spending.
It is obvious that the policy pursued so far is not capable of curbing misinformation and manipulation. Quite apart from a sharp tightening of the regulations and the financial penalties when it is violated, there is actually a ”Columbus egg” that with one stroke can solve many of the problems – TAXATION OF ALL INTERNET TRAFFIC IN EU. Of course, such taxation must be regulated depending on the type of activity/traffic in question, but with one stroke It will be possible to minimize both spam and rogue activity. Who wants to pay for content that they know is junk?! There will be a need for extra taxation in the coming years, and here is an instrument that can both benefit democracy and raise funds for the further development of society!
@claesdevreese we need to start somewhere to reduce the dependency to US cloud.
@claesdevreese beware of future nextcloud enshittification. They're just a corp in search of money, looking at AI and neglecting the establishment of a foundation to care about the project.
