Short Explanation: I... somehow hadn't realized that Metal Sonic picks up a haunted object ( https://sonic.fandom.com/wiki/Lost_Labyrinth_treasure ) in Sonic 4. It's consistent with the weird purple effects of his Black Shield, as well as various special attacks sprinkled around in other games that feature him.
