New blog post: Understanding ActivityPub - Part 2: Lemmy

This time, I'm taking a look at Lemmy, the Reddit alternative for the Fediverse. Follow along to explore how Lemmy uses the ActivityPub protocol to sync data between different instances. See how Mastdon and Lemmy can talk to each other, and where the communication falls short. And try it out yourself on ActivityPub.Academy.

seb.jambor.devUnderstanding ActivityPub - Part 2: LemmyUsing ActivityPub.Academy, I'm exploring how Lemmy uses ActivityPub. The post uses real-world examples that you can try on your own.

@crepels this whole series is incredible! Only found out about it thanks to @b0rk’s recent post about solo instances.

@crepels is using an "!" instead of "@" an accepted standard for group (actors)? Eg. "!activitypub@lemmy.activitypub.academy". Or is that just a thing?

@YurkshireLad Sorry, I missed your message. I don't know if the "!" is an accepted standard. To be honest, I don't even know if the "@" is an accepted standard. The translation of full mentions to ActivityPub Actor IDs happens via WebFinger, but the corresponding RFC (datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/) doesn't mention the leading "@" at all.

@crepels@mastodon.social Excellent post! I was listening to the @linuxmatters@ubuntu.social podcast and well, I joined the fediverse party yesterday with an instance of @dev@microblog.pub I think it's a good mix between blog and microblog. I do also have a Jekyll blog in github but could be a good option to get more dynamic :)
