Wow. Amsterdam just opened its first plastic-free supermarket isle

Apparently, all those bags are made of a bio-degradable material
@applecandy Oh, I hope they come up with better ones that break down easily
Even the “septic-safe” ones don’t really decompose all that well. I’m planning to move to a cabin with a composting toilet and I really don’t want to go back to toilet paper
@cypnk you don’t use loo rolls currently?
@applecandy I do, sparingly. But I also have a washlet installed, which won’t be an option in the cabin (no running water)
@cypnk have you found any more info about what the clear wrap material is? I'm interested, but either journalists aren't interested in that or they're playing coy with the formula
@rubah I’m pretty sure it’s an existing type. The US and Europe have different standards, but if the material falls under ASTM D6400 or D6868, then it’s considered “compostable”
These kinds of plastics have already been in use for years and it’s unlikely to be a new formula (to cut costs). You can already buy them here for food/kitchen waste bags meant to go whole into the compost heap. They do take longer to break down than leaves, but moisture and heat from the compost accelerates it
@cypnk they’re trying to cut down over here too with banning wet wipes in not too distant future!
I need my wet wipes! Hopefully they’ll do non plastic ones
