People who hate Richard Stallman seem to be more insufferable than Richard Stallman
They're like the Jehovah's Witnesses of RMS hate
"Here's a thing about security"
"Yes, but did you know RMS is a dick?"
What the devil does that have to do with anything?!
@technomancy "Want to share this fallacy on Facebook? Here's a button for you"
I believe this is called "Ad nauseam"
@bob World renowned jerk from what I gather, but from what I've read since, it's highly likely he was on the spectrum
@cypnk People seem to be under impression that everyone must be the model human being, the beacon of all good, pure and sacred, and never have a speck on their reputation in order to be respected.
No. I respect RMS because of what he did as a hacker and a free software nation builder, and he did all that because as far as digital rights go, he knows what's up. That's it. Otherwise, he's just a human, imperfect like everyone else. Everyone is capable of some grim shit, it's silly to deny that.
@drequivalent Thank you!
Everyone must not be the model human being, but there's a difference b/w "not being a model human being" and "being a really problematic person who gets away with shit because of an equally problematic personality cult that protects him"
There are many good people out there who do awesome stuff, so why keep supporting the problematic dude? At least know & speak about the shitty stuff along the good stuff, it's a clear case of #yourfaveisproblematic
@tether @cypnk Life is never as simple as "problematic vs non-problematic", and
one awesome stuff doesn't necessarily compare to another. RMS is notable for inventing FOSS, as a concept. The same way as Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace is responsible for programming, as a concept, or Alan Mathison Turing, who is the father of, basically, modern computing as a whole. (oh, and he also hacked nazis, and now there's way fewer nazis. That's also great, thanks for that Al!)
Those are pioneers. The people who broke new ground, and other people are now working inside their framework.
So... Is that stuff listed on the page deplorable? Yes, I suppose it is.
Does that automatically cancel RMS's achievements? No.
That's all I have to say on the matter.
@tether @drequivalent @cypnk
Using the word problematic so many times. Dear god. Read a dictionary.
Do you even know the origins of that word? Its used to refer to down syndome people and people with various brain issues.(of course its also a light insult instead of saying "retard")
Yes his fans are really devout, but here's the thing: Majority of them actually practice what they preach. That i at least respect.
RMS is infinite inspiration
