I'm starting to think the prolific "French Romance" genre is just layers upon layers of angst that's somehow composted enough to grow roses

Maybe it was the French way of dealing with the trauma, but when I look back at some of the immediate post-war romance (even comedies), there's a lot of thinly veiled sadness and dread. I don't think that's totally attributable to cultural differences or different sensibilities
