"You have too much time on your hands" is one of the worst possible sentences to utter

It demeans quest for happiness, arguably the only reason for sentience. The person who says it has given up experiencing joy for its own sake, to have pleasure in activities beyond productivity

A person who judges another's use of free time so callously is already dead inside

Also, it's OK to not know what you're doing, when you're doing it, how you're doing it, or even if you should be doing it

I still have trouble with socks

@cypnk I always feel I do not have enough to time to enjoy and unplug, and then do other worthwhile personal pursuits.

You make good points above. It is a dangerous thought and accusation, and I think worth contemplating the societal norms which engendered such an awful view of personal time.

@uranther We're all running in the hamster wheel to some degree, but yeah, the world is bigger than that cage

@cypnk Last night at the bar I brought up this saying with my friend.

People choose to use their time differently and there is nothing wrong with that. Take for example, someone who spends 8000 hours building a model of Middle Earth using LEGO. Or the competitive domino stackers(?). These people learn concentration and self-empowerment, engineering, science, technology, project/time management and leadership.

Someone who uses that saying must have a deep insecurity about how they spend their time.

@cypnk I also asked this question: cybre.space/@uranther/99242038

Similarly, people who want to spend their time shaving yaks are more curious about the world than the average schmoe saying "you have too much time on your hands."

To this narrow-minded person - blind to the wonders of the world - concentration and skill are something to be feared and ridiculed, perhaps because they sense their own capacity hobbled by gluttony of meaningless activities.

@cypnk I feel like it very much plays into the sanctimonious Puritan/Protestant notion of "idle hands are the Devil's plaything" and so on

@cypnk People only interested in ways they can personally benefit from your output, and nothing else.

@cypnk I feel like it's OK when the subject at hand is some extraordinarily silly one-off thing. But maybe not even then... 🤔

@varx But how does one define silly? Even if it is silly, if it gives you happiness, it gets very tricky. I don't think you'd appreciate it if I were to suddenly barge in and say something that makes you happy is a waste of time no matter what it is

If you're not harming anyone, and it's silly, but if it makes you happy, I'd say go for it and be silly
