Sacha Baron Cohen's ADL speech
In which I provide:
- an audio version
- reflections on what is a brilliant (and yet reasonably conservative and technically-naive) speech
- three alternative ways we could save democracies from Big Tech
The way higher education in the UK is going right now is insane. Successive governments have forced the sector down a profit-driven path that it should not be on and is completely ill-equipped to cope with.
The result? Staff are striking over pay and pensions, and management teams are starting to threaten *their own students* for supporting staff.
When your customers are supporting your staff in industrial action it's time to take a long hard look in the mirror.
A spectacular speech. I actually considered going to New York to see it in person. Cohen has got this topic dead to rights. We need some dramatic changes now.
Between Google becoming grand poobah of the .new TLD, and this .org sale horse-hooey, I am sincerely hoping that someone creates a new carrier wave for internet naming. DNS over HTTPS is cool, but I'm afraid we're just bolting more layers of abstraction to plug holes in a bucket.
I hate saying this, because I have always *loved* how DNS worked *in its time*. I think that time is passing.
It's time to make an internet system naming fediverse. Fuck the gatekeepers.
If you have a .org domain name: go renew it now. For the full 10 years.
Registration rights for .org were just bought by a private equity firm. And as part of that contract, the price caps were removed.
Anything in .org will get much more expensive, soon.
A ten year renewal will cost you a bit over a hundred bucks. Which is probably less than one year will cost you in the very near future.
