The Washington Post is about to lurch sharply to the right politically as former Murdoch apparatchik solidifies his grip on the organization. Current editor Buzbee is out, and he's bringing in people from Murdoch's Wall Street Journal and the Telegraph (right-wing UK news org).

The Washington Post · Sally Buzbee steps down as editor of The Washington PostBy Elahe Izadi

@dangillmor Ah, that was the shoe I suspected that was going to drop when I first heard this...thank you.

@dangillmor
Oh, dear god. The world really doesn't need that.

@dangillmor Let’s be honest it’s not gonna be a huge lurch just a more open appearance of lurchyness. They’ve been tippy lurching for quite some time.

@dangillmor

It has been considered a rag paper for a few years now.

This solidifies that categorization.

@dangillmor
My read is their new section
/offshoot will be more Fox like, prioritizing giving readers "news" to get excited/enraged about over anything factual.

@dangillmor Dammit. Time to let my subscription go, perhaps.

I don’t know where I turn for print journalism now. (I lost patience with the NYT years ago over their biased, intolerant coverage of trans issues and progressive politicians.)

@dangillmor
Well it's cancel WAPO time for me. I will support ProPublica from now on where I can get in depth serious journalism. I have added my two cents worth in Wapo comment section.

@dangillmor They kicked me off that paper a while back. I spoke my mind in the comment section and they banned me. So I dropped my subscription. This is almost 2 years ago. I figured out real fast they were turning right-wing.

@dangillmor
This, after WAMU suddenly axed DCist. DC is already hurting for reputable journalism, and pretty much every story from inside the Beltway tells us it needs more scrutiny, not less.

@dangillmor So Murdoch marries a russian agent controlled by putin.

@dangillmor
#Fascism isn’t creeping in, it’s sprinting. Desperation. It’s the only way #capitalism hopes to survive. #shorttermthinking

@dangillmor commented my displeasure on the article at WaPo and have cancelled my longtime subscription. How damned sad.

Winnett is now out at proposed new WaPo editor after details of his shady reporting methods have emerged.

The Washington Post · Robert Winnett will not join The Post as editorBy Elahe Izadi

@dangillmor Angry to lose the #washingtonpost to the right wing rage machine.

Democracy Dies.
In darkness.
#press

@dangillmor let’s not forget that Jeff Bezos owns The Post. So he must endorse this rightward shift.

Maybe think about buying things from somewhere other than Amazon.

@dangillmor Democracy dies in darkness…

@dangillmor Haven't they already been giving awfully biased pro-trump reporting for the past several years?

@Dervishpi That’s been my take. This is just a more overt public ownership of what they already are. @dangillmor

@dangillmor it’s really disappointing to see the newsroom led across the board by people with experience from a narrow swath of media: right-leaning UK or right-leaning US; and all white men. That doesn’t reflect Washington DC and it doesn’t reflect the U.S.

@dangillmor So where the heck am I supposed to get my news from on a daily basis?? NPR has become far too dumbed-down and 'both sides'; NYT is increasingly a Trump rag and anti trans to boot; WAPO lurching to the right, becoming a subsidiery of Fox, that doesn't leave a lot of reasonable options...

@dangillmor well hell. Time to cancel my subscription I guess.

@dangillmor I've been leaning toward canceling my subscription for a while now, and this just pushed me to do it. Thanks.

@dangillmor Some years ago Bezos said that of all his accomplishments, saving the Washington Post was what he was most proud of. And he gave the Post a lot of editorial freedom over the years. I am no Bezos fan but I gave him props for those things.

There’s no chance he’ll be remembered for it now. I wonder if he thought about that, even for a second.
