Meta is an evil company. Now it's filtering, and in some cases banning, discussions -- and users -- mentioning Linux.

tomshardware.com/software/linu

Maybe, as some are saying, it's just another "mistake" that will be quickly rectified. But come on, how can something like this happen in the first place?

Tom's Hardware · Facebook flags Linux topics as 'cybersecurity threats' — posts and users being blockedBy Mark Tyson

@dangillmor This doesn’t even make any sense. Unless the Illuminati realize that Linux is the last bastion of private computing and that doesn’t serve their purpose.

@dangillmor this, despite running most of its cloud on Linux servers?

@dangillmor I would be very surprised if they’re not using a Linux distro as the OS on their servers…

@dangillmor what did you expect?

And don't tell me you were hoping he'd ignore a) the opposition and b) people who want to take his money away.

@dangillmor "Facebook's internal policy makers decided that Linux is malware and labeled groups associated with Linux as being 'cybersecurity threats.'

Woah! Talk about a distopic future!!

@dangillmor As a Limix advocate, this is annoying.

@dangillmor That must be the free speech they’re restoring.

@dangillmor
Democratic structures are poison to Authoritarians.
🖤♥️

@dangillmor it is like how Tik Tok is removing comments that mention Red note or not liking Trump. It is getting bad

@dangillmor #Linux users are very malicious and could consider their freedom more important than required for shareholders' wealth.

@dangillmor Seems a bit random - I had heard that links to Pixelfed and Mastodon would be removed. But anytime I've posted they've been OK. Also discussed DeepSeek with MetaAI which confirmed that the US tech giants are a group of secretive, competitive, capitalists incapable of working collaboratively (amongst other stuff).

@dangillmor
And this is why I deleted Facebook in 2020
@april

@dangillmor ...so the discussion is whether they are evil or merely incompetent?

Is there an "all of the above" option?

@dangillmor I get the censorship, which is most likely a mistake, but who uses Meta products if you are a Linux user? Also, the irony of their platform running on Linux...

@dangillmor - and isn't it funny how those "mistakes" always just happen to be to the benefit of the oligarchic establishment...?

I bet their own servers are running on Linux…

@dangillmor Linux literally runs the Internet, so what is the reason for this?

@dangillmor @meta censurerar även allt om Israels folkmord o stänger av antizionister.

@dangillmor You misunderstand what they are doing.

Under the rule of radical conservatism, lying is the new ”virtue signalling”

Conservatism is based on one proposition only: there should be an in-group whom the law protects but does not bind, and an out-group the law binds but does not protect (#wilhoitslaw )

In the post-modern age, this is public knowledge. So it’s not just the elite anymore whom this is addressed to, but more ”owning the libs” type messaging & loyalty sign

@dangillmor they made linux oppression real?

@dangillmor The Linux Kernal is about 40M lines of code. Could we please add one making the kernel run for 42 minutes until it deletes all accessible date and crashed violently on any hosts having a hostname on the #Meta #Facebook #Whatsapp oder #instagram domains?

@dangillmor all that parent child violence and signalled killing! And those master slave relationships?

@dangillmor

I think people might be getting ahead of themselves on this one. Far from me wanting to defend Meta, I hate their products and they're aligning with fascists - but, what might have happened is that some websites were wrongly flagged for malware by their automated systems, which is a very common occurrence. Having worked in the industry, I know how prevalent this can be and must be rechecked and corrected by human supervision with a bunch of different tools. Just calm down, everyone...

@per_sonne @dangillmor

This snippet doesn't really make the whole thing look like a mistake, though...

Copenhagen-hosted DistroWatch says it has tried to appeal against the Community Standards-triggered ban. However, they say that a Facebook representative said that Linux topics would remain on the cybersecurity filter. The DistroWatch writer subsequently got their Facebook account locked…

@baardhaveland @dangillmor

Probably a low-level subcontractor working from somewhere outside the US or Denmark (if not a bot); the case will probably be escalated to an SME or Policy supervisor, who will unblock the ban after running a number of double-checks and checking back and forth with an upper level policy team.
Yeah, it's that inefficient. Soviet bureaucracy pales in comparison.

@dangillmor Doesn't seem to be happening here in the UK. I saw this earlier and posted a link to Distrowatch on my FB page to see what would happen.

Nothing has happened. It's still there.

@dangillmor So far the MX Linux and Anti-X groups are active.

@dangillmor Big tech overtly quashing small tech can't ever be ignored.

There was a time when I had a Linux laptop. But I couldn't keep up with it. I've been back and forth. But maybe it might make sense to try it again?

@dangillmor Huh. Could I still use it from my Linux if I wanted? I am an hacker, after all (or so it seems).

@dangillmor 2025 thug life: to open Mastodon and bluesky on my 12yo laptop with linux mint 😎

@dangillmor It's not an error. As of a few weeks ago, Facebook has placed a human verification wall in front of my account even though I have 2FA enabled. I haven't tried accessing the account from Windows, but I'm going to at some point to see if it's a Linux thing.

@dangillmor no reason to talk about Linux on facebook, even no reason to talk about nothing on facebook.

Sad thing is users have the power to kill Meta, doing nothing, not read, not write, just breathing, but it’s hard, their products are so deep installed on us that it makes almost imposible this change. I’m an instagram and WhatsApp user myself but gladly would jump in a revolution ship like that.

So easy to dream…
