Looking around, Mastodon and the FediVerse seem to be transforming into a new way of operating.

After the migration of leading journalists and influentials, now journalistic platforms are coming on board, which is a huge incentive for politicians and non profits (and ultimately corporations).

This will drive a virtuous adoption cycle, at least until we discover a limiting principle, which I suspect will be server costs and moderation burdens.
