“Since we took external investment we need a liquidity event.” – GitLab
@aral @dansup good article. Amaroq mangles links when there are other adjacent non-URL chars (including parens or other punctuation), so here it is by itself:

@AlainODea @dansup Thanks, Alain – good to know. Is there an issue open for that?
@aral I found a similar issue:
https://github.com/ReticentJohn/Amaroq/issues/45
It’s not exact. I’ll do some test reductions and post a new specific issue for this.
@aral I found the matching issue and provided some additional problem and solution analysis to help get to a fix:
https://github.com/ReticentJohn/Amaroq/issues/69#issuecomment-399783841
@AlainODea Awesome! Thank you so much :)
@aral my pleasure. I figured it's worth acting on the advice in your article :) I can't help the commons with subtoots :D
Actual quote or speculative mind-reading? (But probly accurate anyway...)
@bhaugen Actual quote from CEO. https://twitter.com/sytses/status/1003415290368028672

@Rosemary @chr it's an IPO.. initial public offering. You need liquidity, which is cash from common shares you sell on the market. It's considered "liquid" because it can be bought or sold instantly, instead of with bonds where.you have to hold for a set period of time, or private capital like Venture Capital where you put money in and can't touch it for a period of years. VCs need liquidity to sell their shares in a company to realise profit.
@dansup platform co-operatives like Resonate.is are the answer to this. At least, I think/hope they are. WhatsApp could have been sustainable with a $1 a year subscription. Most of these things fall apart because of straight up greed. people gotta keep up with the Joneses though :/ I just sold out at work and chose an easy to use but more expensive software so I'd look good, even though I know the long term costs are going to hurt my company. Is what it is.
@dansup
Monetize, monetize, monetize...
@dansup When you take VC, you sell the company. No ifs, no buts. We keep getting surprised as the sale usually just takes several years to complete. C’est la “exit”.
This is why VC investment is incompatible with sustainable businesses with social missions. And why I keep harping on about how we must support projects that benefit the commons from the commons (https://ar.al/notes/encouraging-individual-sovereignty-and-a-healthy-commons/)
