Pixelfed is not competing with Mastodon or any other fedi project. The amount of MAU the whole fediverse has is under 1m users. A drop in the bucket compared to centralized, corporate, social media.

For the first time in a long, long while, projects can be built not with the intentions to compete but to complement each other. To Federate is to complement, to acknowledge that there are other services that can make your platform better.

This, 100%. There is no Fediverse if apps don't put in the work required for interoperability and federation.
