If someone told me pixelfed.social would overtake mastodon.social in MAU in early 2025, I wouldn't have believed them.
This could happen in the next week or two, assuming the growth continues (no sign of slowing down).

IMHO instances ought to be limited to a four-digit figure of users, also so the collateral of defederation, when moderation is insufficient after all, isn’t so bad.
@dansup I spend my days introducing people to Pixelfed, but Pixelfed must avoid the mistake Mastodon made when Bluesky overtook it. The app needs to focus on improvements before Bluesky launches its new app, Flashes, which could easily surpass Pixelfed and make our app forgotten. To stay in the lead, Pixelfed should add features like post sharing with other users DM , dark mode, account switching, and more.

There are already apps which support account switching and dark mode for pixelfed. You don't have to use the 'official' app.

@pixelfedfans to be honest I think the official app is a good start. I personally use PixelDroid on Android exclusively for PixelFed, but also Fedilab with multiple accounts.

Mastodon and Pixelfed are the public faces to the centralized world so if someone is switching they want a single answer, not "choose from 50!"
People are fickle in their time spent online so if they're used to IG and when they try Pixelfed for a couple days and don't see feature parity in what they used to have, they're out and aren't returning.

well in my opinion if you want to use a new tool, you have to learn how to use it and not blindly accept a terms and conditions of a platform by a billionaire in the first place.
People need to learn that openness is about choice and not about reach. But I guess that's just me then and is also fine by me if you think different.

@dansup mind my naivety but why is the pixelfed.social instance being larger than mastodon.social a good/bad thing? Isn't it just, like, good to have a general increase to the fediverse from any non-corporate instance?
@sammypanda @dansup I think he is just hyped for that something he built seems to resonate with people ! He is comparing it to mastodon.social as it is kind of the same scale projet I guess :)
