Dan York is a user on mastodon.social. You can follow them or interact with them if you have an account anywhere in the fediverse. If you don't, you can sign up here.

If you're following me over here on tetaneutral but you're on octodon, I was finally able to set up an account on the octodon instance. I'm @Shel_Holtz over there.

@shelholtz @Shel_Holtz And now, because you can't apparently DELETE a Mastodon account, you may have people finding and following you on BOTH accounts. (Which is similar to how people will send you email to multiple email accounts.)

@danyork Yeah, I took that into account. I'm probably going to add my Octodon account to my Tetaneutral profile.

@Shel_Holtz Ah, that makes sense. You could also post a "final" toot on the old one pointing over to the new one.

If you do that, you might want to put the URL in of octodon.social/@shel_holtz as I've found it quicker for people to get to your profile that way.

@danyork And I may do this again if mastodon.social opens up. We'll see.

@Shel_Holtz @danyork One of the downsides of the decentralized approach, yeah? If you decide you want to switch instances, you need a new username and account.

@BryanPerson That could also be advantageous. Participate in a music-themed isntance using one identity and a business-themed instance using another.

@Shel_Holtz Maybe so :) I still don't understand the nuances of different instances. My "Home" feed, for example, includes updates from the people I've followed, regardless of their local instance, it appears.

@BryanPerson @Shel_Holtz Yes, just like when switching email providers, you have to somehow let people know your new email address.
