@daringfireball They all seem unwilling to see that it's the beginning of the end of American Democracy.
Democracy lasts only as long as a country's people insist that it does, and not enough insisted.

@daringfireball but then you are also still on X. So you support the whole thing.

@hub @daringfireball Yeah @gruber's refusal to leave the nazi bar is, as with the rest of media's refusal to leave, a big part of the problem. They can't bear to do it because it's part of their business model. Hypocrites.

@delric @hub @daringfireball @gruber
Leaving Twitter/X is an unforced error by those of us who oppose Trump and the GOP. We can't win elections by speaking in our isolated Threads/Mastodon/Bluesky echo chambers.
Swing voters DO exist -- and if we never attempt to convince them by withdrawing to our own corners, we will lose again in the future.

@TedTodorov @hub @daringfireball @gruber if you believe arguments on twitter are gonna save democracy, I really don’t know what to tell ya. Sorry no, it’s just navel gazing

@delric @hub The @daringfireball X account has been broken (because of API changes) for over a year, I think. It's true I haven't left in protest but my posting and time spent there have ever dwindled.

@daringfireball It's almost as if the billionaire-class is more loyal to wealth generation than the purported values of their nation. I too hope they remove this man's junk from their mouths some day soon.

@daringfireball Until Trump, everyone referred to ex-Presidents as "President X"....

@Globaltom @daringfireball Citation needed. There is only one president, so the title of President does not travel. You may be thinking of senators and judges, where the last-earned title does travel.

@delric @Globaltom @daringfireball it’s also tinged with the way right-wingers say it to mean 2020 was stolen and the impeachments were fake etc

@delric @Globaltom @daringfireball While I agree that only the current president should be referred to as such, he's right in that former Presidents are called “President" (not “ex-President” or something else.) What I don't know is what he meant by “until Trump”…

@jcgarza @Globaltom @daringfireball they are referred to as former-president. When referring to one in their historical role/context it’s common to say things like “President Trump was a disastrous mob-boss of a president,” or “Mayor Giuliani was a documented liar,” but one would not refer to that person in the present with that title as they are no longer serving in that role and somebody else is.

@jcgarza I meant that when Trump stopped being president, people starting saying "ex-President" or "former President" for all former presidents.

@delric I'm just going by memory of informal usage, I'm afraid.

You would hear things like "President Bush has endorsed Mitt Romney".

(Similarly, when Hillary Clinton ran for president, she got referred to as "Secretary Clinton", even though she no longer held that job)

@daringfireball These things are all performative. They are not for the president, they’re for everyone else to see. If they were just congratulating the president, they could contact him privately. They are all kissing the ring and the ass. Publicly.

@daringfireball This is the best you've ever written, it got me all fired up!! 🙏 Fuck them all, and especially Tim Cook. I expected more from him. What a sell-out. I too hope the taste lingers.

@daringfireball congratulations on learning that the rich don’t have people’s best interests in mind

@daringfireball Gary Kasparov: Trump may not last the term, but he’s a distracting figurehead while the government is "streamlined" into a vacuum cleaner of money, political control, & favors for foreign and domestic oligarchs. This is the model of Putin, Orban, & Trump's other heroes. Power privatization. 6/7

@daringfireball Surely all these tech companies stand to gain a lot from government contracts.

@daringfireball Trump has already given Russia license to take large chunks of Ukraine and indicated he will NOT defend Taiwan. I can’t see that working out well for Tim Cook. Does he think he’ll talk Trump into changing his mind on Taiwan?
